i have patch 1.08 installed. if i want to play a mp game on lan, does the other have to have patch 1.08? or are other variants compatible?

THey must have the exact same version you have. So if you have one of the beta patches installed as well, they must have that exact same one as well.
 
But this is MP stuff, and everything MP related goes in the MP forum.
