Computer Crashes when attempting to ally with Russia

Ok, for me, WW2 is pretty much over. All allied Nations are defeated, I'm playing as Italy, and just for fun, since its 1942 and there is no allies left, I thought it might be fun to ally with Russia, see what its like to go toe to toe with Germany. but when I tried to ally with Russia after leaving the Axis alliance my computer crashes every time. It does the same thing every time I try to disband a "bugged" airborne division. How do I fix this?

Have you downloaded the latest patch?

I dont know how to do the patch thing. I'm not quite sure what they are. My HOI game is the originial one you get when you first install the store bought package with the game.
so I have yet to install any patches.

What publisher version do you have?
Their logo will be on the cd.
And the version number should be in the top right corner of the main screen where you start new games or load old ones.
