I'm sorry to ask something that's probably been asked many times before but I'm unable to find the answer in the manual, on the board, or in the FAQs.

What rules govern when a Conquistador loses his special abilities? It seems that when I reinforce one in the Old World, he loses his Conquistador symbol and becomes a General instead. That's fine, I suppose, but is there any way to convert him back? And is it a bug that you seem to be able to reinforce their forces in the New World?

What exactly happens, when, and why? I'm a bit baffled!

TIA . . .

I'm a bit confused about your statements but anyway this is how it works.

Conquistadors & Explorers only have Fire & Shock values of 0 in Europe. They should be fully 'operational' every where else.

Maybe u merged them with a higher ranked officer. In that case that general (or whatever) is in charge and the Conquistador is just somewhere below him in the army. In that case u have to split the armies to have one with the general in charge and one with the conquistador.

Hmm, something strange going on . . .

The affected units have their original stats, or at least have them reported that way. What happens is that the little icon to the right of their name (and the name field still shows them in charge of their army) disappears. If I later try to move them into unexplored territory in the New World, I receive the warning that this unit won't/can't do that and I should send a Conquistidor.

I'm quite sure it isn't a problem with merging with a higher ranked officer since their names still appeared in command. I tried both spliting and reorganizing their forces in an attempt to lower the number of troops under their command, thinking that might be the key, but they never regain their 'helmet' or the abilities that go with it.

And, unless I'm getting a false display, the three stats visible under their name remain the same in Europe and the New World, and also stay the same even if this strange 'defrocking' takes place.

Bug, I guess . . . I'm using the US 1.07c, straight out of the box, and it has been hitting me while playing Spain in the Grand Campaign. I haven't had time to find out if it happens with other nations and/or in other scenarios.

So far, this has happened without fail everytime I add troops (by any method) to a Conquistidor-led army in the Old World. Geez, is it just me?

Yes, the name didn't change when this happened and, as a matter of fact, one of them just croaked for certain a few moments ago when I was playing before coming back online.

One thing I left out before is that, after their 'change of career', they have a different symbol by their name listed in the Archive's Leaders page.

Thanks for the help, everybody. I wish I knew what was going on or why I seem to be the only one it is happening to! Aside from this very minor bug, I'm have a problem-free and very enjoyable experience with the game.

after their 'change of career', they have a different symbol by their name listed in the Archive's Leaders page.

There are a limited ammounbt of names for each countires run of the mill leaders and random conquistadors etc. I for instance once had no less the 3 Glinskis at the same time (boy was it hard to distinguis one from the other =).

IOW, most likely your conquistador has died and by pure chance has been replaced by a no thrills leader with the same name. Happens all the time =)

I have, and I am sure many others have, reinforced conquistadors in the old world without problems. I think the conquistador is dying and being replaced, myself.

You can check the saved file to find the leader's status. I think the random generic leaders do not appear on the historical leader listing, just as an appendix to the unit description.
