You can't build them. There are two ways of getting one: you either get a historical leader with the special ability (and I don't think all nations have these), or you get a non-historical one through a random event.

BTW, you can start colonization without conquistadors/discoverers. Sometimes, through a random event, you may steal another nation's maps, and even if you don't, the world map will eventually be revealed to you no matter what. Knowledge doesn't stay secret for very long.

Well conquistadors and explorers can't be build, they appear historically at a certain time, or as a special event.
So you'll have to wait unitl one of these shows up!
Until now i don't have played sweden so i can't tell you how long you have to wait for those explorers.
Or you can try to exchange maps with other nations, e.g england or france.

Heh... three answers in three minutes!

About trading maps: has anybody ever succeeded in a useful map trade? The only one I can remember succeeding in was one in my Austrian GC, where I had just stolen Portuguese maps, and traded them to Russia -- I knew hundreds of provinces that they didn't, and all the extra they knew were their northern colonies and a few provinces in Siberia. (I figured trading maps with them couldn't hurt, since they were still landlocked and hence out of the colonization race everywhere except Siberia.)

Well i had a good map deal playing russia:
First i traded maps with venice, then with denmark, and finally with england.
Yeah that was a good one.... although it took me a lot of money and time!

I do not know what ye guys are talking about.
Maptrading? Hard?

*cackles insanely* Why, you just edit the files of course! Hah. Columbus! :D

Seriously, though.
I've never found map trading to be all that hard. You need to do it early, however, or they will have traded with other nations and you're left out in the cold.
Also, try to have positive relations with the country in question, this helps alot!
I once traded 50ish unknown provs for 100ish with france. Good deal.
If your relations are worse, you will need substantially more unknown to have them go through with the deal.

The other day, while playing prussia in the Age of Reason, Holland actually traded 300 of their unknown against 100 of mine. I guess the fact that the relationship was at +200 helped, but still, it IS possible.

For trading, You need

- good relations
- something worth to offer

There´s another point not always recognized: YOU DON`T EXPEND A DIPLOMAT TRADING MAPS! Even not, if it fails. So just try and try and try.... :)

If you use 'columbus' too soon, you may see spain actually not coming in at #1, since no country gets exploration credit if you discover the entire world by 1492. Spain not beating everybody else by a thousand vistory points is a concept I cannot even begin to comprehend...

There is another opportunity for the Strong and Brave.... :)

IF you conquer a country's capital you get the map of the world as they see it. So as Sweden you might if you strong enough attack England for example and only go for one thing, namely storming London... Then you'll get the map over at least parts of North America. :)

take ower all parts of england but not their cpaital and then storm it sometimes and you get maps ower the whole world.

I agree that it is high to be able to see everything they own. I think it should be an occurrence that is at least as frequent as it is now. However, you should usually only learn of some of the territories they know. It is realistic that only some maps would be present on ships you beat in battle.

I second that. As of now it's almost pointless to explore yourself. Just declare war on Spain, Portugal or England and beat 1 or 2 small fleets (which usually are spread into way too many weak 2-3 ship stacks) and soon you have 'discovered' the entire world.
The maps where one of the most regarded state secrets at the time and the posibility that basicly every ship larger then a rowing boat would have them aboard is quite ridicoulus. PLEASE lower the % chance to steal them.

Tom's suggestion would be a greate solution too, but might be difficult to add to the game at this point (?)

When does the rest of the world get revealed?

It never 'get revealed', either you explore it yourself (unlikely) or
you steal/trade/conquer the information on the map from the other
nations. They (the CPs) do have the advantage of endless patience :)
that really helps in exploring. And yeah, their ships do at time seem
invunerable to attrition. :(

Eventually you get some. I play Sweden and after a while I got 2-3 during the late 1500 and 1600... I'm talking about naval 'utforskare'/explorers, haven't seen any 'conquistadores' so far.
