The game manual keeps talking about these special commanders. Where do they come from or how do you make them? I have yet to see a conquistador.

two ways to get them:
1) You have random events on, and you get the random event that gives you a conquistador.
2 and more likely) You're playing a major colonizing nation, and you get one from a historical event. e.g. Portugal gets Francis Xavier in X year. Keep in mind that only certain nations had people like this, mainly major colonizers. Most of the major powers have them. They have a little helmet next to them to indicate conquistador, so its possible you've had them and you just didn't know it.

There are two ways to get conquistadors. You get whichever ones your country historically had, and you can sometimes get one by random event.

In Europa Universalis/DB/Leaders there's a file, historicalleaders.xls, that lists all your leaders, including when they arrive and when they die - a 'C' in the thrid column means that the leader is a conquistador. Note that not every country gets conquistadors; Austria never gets any, for instance.

If you're playing Fantasia, you'll never see conquistadors or explorers.

In the GC, most majors get them according to historical settings and they also pop-up as random events. Check your leaders log for a leader with a funny-looking hat under 'Type' in case you missed one.

You may want to play the IGC instead of the GC. They've added historical leaders to the smaller countries, whereas, with a few exceptions, the GC only has them for the major powers. This is invaluable for playing a minor country, but it may also make things more challenging for you when playing a major power.
