Consistant Fatal Errors on game start or load

I was able to start a game yesterday, and I was able to load it once, although it had graphical glitches (lines across all of the text boxes, rendering everything barely readable).

Now every time I try to start a new game, I get the following Fatal Error:

*** Unhandled Exception Detected!
Address: 0x026A0EE8

The log file gives the following:

Try a complete reinstallation.

I tried that using the uninstall .exe files in the CK directory. I wasn't sure if the registry keys need to be manually cleared as well, or if the .exe takes care of it.

I just reran the re-install.

Ran unins000.exe, ran unins001.exe
Deleted the folder
Cleared my recycle bin
Checked the regedit and didn't see any CK keys
Downloaded and installed Crusader Kings from gamersgate
Downloaded and installed Deus Vult from gamersgate
Downloaded the latest patch and overwrote the files.

Started the game, selected a new single player game, picked somerset, hit start. The screen goes black and I hear the 'ping' behind the game music. Alt-tab out to find the same fatal error dialog.

One thing I noticed - not sure if it makes a difference or not - the value of DeusVult registry key is 2.0 when it's running the 2.1b beta.

It should read 2.1b beta, so that is weird.

Try these things

- Rename your AVI-folder (in the main crusader kings folder) to something else (like AVIback f.e.)

- Go into the settings.txt file and make sure the resolution there matches what your video card/monitor can support. When in doubt set it to 1024 X 768 refresh 60.

- Set colourdepth to 16 bit

Looks like renaming the avi folder worked - it loaded just fine. I'm going to play a while, save, reload, and see if it all works properly.
