I have rarely had Victoria be able to connect to another computer for MP action. The game doesn't think I'm online. I use AOL for the Internet, though, so could that be the problem?

you are talking about 56k aol or the broadband thingy? If you can't connect then either you have a software/hardware firewall blocking it, or your isp is blocking it somehow.
"AOL 9.0 Optimized," the broadband version. I don't have this problem for any other MP game, though.
well something is blocking vickys ports, it is a bit more picky than other games. I would suggest loading vnet on vic, then go to a port probe site, i use shuilds up at grc.com. Probe the ports needed by vic. If they are stealth then you definatley have a firewall screwing you up, if they are open, you are good, if they are closed, probably good, vic just isnt asking for them to be open yet
the only time i have had it freeze on loading vnet is when i forget to turn off my software firewall, make sure you have none running , including the xp one
Do you have a program like Norton Internet Security, Mcafee or Zone Alarm running?

hmmmmmmmm.... this is my same situation, i fixed it by creating a VPN conection. i still cant get in vnet but i have joined games by ip addres
