First of all the design team should be congratulated for a truly epic game.

However, I'm getting increasingly confused and irritated by constant crashes to desktop. I'm no computer guru but I've tried everything I can think of: installing the 1.09 patch; running the "no music" version; re-installing; defragmenting; switching sound acceleration off...............

The crashes seem to random in that they occur during different scenarios, playing different nations and after different events. Sometimes I can go for ages; other times I get clusters of crashes in quick succession.

My p.c specs: PIII 600, 128mb RAM, 15gb hd ( of which about 9gb is free )and a crappy SIS 630 chipset. Yes, I know, but I'm not a rabid gamer - just a strategy buff ( remember Avalon Hill anyone- "Machiavelli" even? ). Furthermore, I don't get problems like this with anything else - not even graphics intensive stuff or memory demanding games which could expose any limitations of my system. Tis should work goddamit!

Please help!! This game deserves to be played....

Does running the No Music option help or make no difference? Does running the game slower make a difference?

You might look at your directx setup, and for any updates of video and sound drivers that might be available for you.

You say "....after different events"

Do not click on the "history" button. It is a known bug and will be fixed in the next patch. A few other crash causes will also be fixed then.

Thanks guys for such a swift reply. I love the Galbraith quote!

O.k, running the "no music" option makes no difference whatsoever and I always play 1 minute= 1 month as I'm pretty new to this.

When I said that crashes occur during different events I meant that I can't discern any common denominator- there's not just one triggering event. Having said that I tried playing again last night and it did crash when I clicked on the history button. I'm not sure that accounts for all the previous crashes but it certainly accounts for some of them. At least I'm aware of that bug now.

Unfortunately there are no new drivers available but you raise an interesting question regarding the DirectX element. I ran dxdiag last night and it appears that there are registry probs in "input" but I've no idea what this means exactly or how to combat it. I have version 7.0 but have heard there of problems with version 8.0. Is there any way of reinstalling version 7.0 to overwrite any registry problems?

Once again, thanks for your help and give my love to Oz. Did you realise that in recent U.K surveys the majority of us poms harboured a secret desire to be Australian?. Just don't tell anyone I told you!!

To reinstall DirectX7 open your EU CD.
Inside you will find a "Directx" folder.
Open it and rummage for an icon "dxsetup".
Double click that and it will reinstall.
There are no problems with the latest Directx8a.
After reinstalling whichever version you like it is best to reinstall your Graphic/sound drivers again. DirectX knows they are there then.

I do not have a secret desire to be Australian - I might end up related to Mr Rolf Harris!
