I had a cacophony of loud, ugly, messed up sound effects which occurred in game and didn't stop. I saved the game at that point, exited and came back in to restore, hoping that would cure it. It didn't, but on the up side I do now have a saved game with that problem. Should I email that saved game to someone here?

did it happen in the mid-1600s and were you playing the fantasia scenario? if so, look in the support section of this board for "loud sound" or "annoying sound" and you'll get a, albeit very troublesome, fix for it.
Rest assure it only happens in the fantasia scenario (it's due to Japan closing it's borders).

No no. That's just the default sounds and background music for the game.
EU has to have SOME kind drawback, now doesn't it?
