How can I assume the military command of puppet or allied forces?

You can ask them for expeditionary forces, but you're not controlling a puppet's or ally's military like you could in HoI2.

What I do is tag switch:
  • PAUSE THE GAME AND KEEP IT PAUSED
  • Open the console
  • Tag switch to the ally's control
  • For ease, do some reorganization so that the forces I want are in a sensible corps/army/etc. structure, with the generals I want
  • Go to the screen where you can offer an expeditionary force
  • Pick the correct formation and offer it
  • Tag switch to my own country
  • Accept the expeditionary force
  • Assign it into the correct hierarchy

Yes, that's the sensible way to deal with the issue.

Many thanks!

Just remember NOT to start the clock while tag-switched, otherwise the AI will rearrange your OOB, cancel most of your trades for essential resources to buy fuel instead, strategically redeploy units across the map, and otherwise make a complete mess of your momentarily leaderless country, all in a matter of seconds. This is not an exaggeration. Best safeguard is to save your game before you tag-switch, so if something does go wrong, you can undo it.

Sure, thanks. I am a veteran Paradox player, seasoned in using the console for about 25 years... and counting! ;)

That's the exact procedure. I have one small addition:

After the reorganizaztion of the ally's command structure (I organize the ally's army from Army Corps XXX up to Army Group XXXXX so I can easily get all troops at once and can integrate them with one move in my war theatre xxxxxx) it is important to build up a new complete (empty) army structure (from war theatre down to army corps) within the ally's army. So the AI will place all the new built divisions automatically in this new army corps. After the army corps is "full" with its 5 divisions, you can transfer the whole army corps again to your expedition forces, instead of transfering each division seperate. And you get an homogeneous army corps (which is in my opnion important for the flavour and it is historically more correct).

I liked the Hoi2-system better, especially because the national color auf the counter was retained, but this procedure is imho an acceptable way to deal with it.
