I just got a new Macintosh computer a few weeks ago, and I'm only now getting around to installing HoI 2 on it. I want to install the CORE expansion again, because I loved playing with CORE on my old laptop. It's great.

The problem is that I've forgotten where I downloaded CORE from last time, the CORE/VIP website looks like a logic bomb went off inside it, and I haven't been able to track down coherent instructions on where to download the Mac version of CORE and how to install it. The sites linked to by the download thread are downloads for Windows only, right?

So: where can I download the latest version of CORE for the Mac, and how do I install it?

because we consier a full number a version functioning as we intend it 100% which is still far from being so. These are still work in progress versions being made available to everyone.

The main difference using a ZIP or EXE is that by creating a real installer (for Windows) we can make sure no files are accidentally overwritten. That's no problem for the main CORE files, as they're located in the moddir, but it is an issue in respect to the main DD files, as we have to include dummy files to make things work, notably in the graphics subdirectories. So the ZIP requires some tinkering, the more so if you're using graphics packs like GIP, while the EXE installer will do the job for you instead. Plus the usual of creating a shortcut, a 'Start bar' entry and such. But apart from that the ZIP is pretty much the same.

Ah-hah.

That makes sense. So from your perspective this is all beta, right?

If possible, I would like to make a request on behalf of all the imperfectly savvy Mac-using CORE fans.

Could you guys release a list of what files need to be replaced for CORE 0.30 to run properly, and where they should go, so that Mac users can reliably make the installation? I had no end of trouble installing CORE on HoI 1, and, for that matter, on HoI 2 on my previous computer. I kept missing a file or misplacing a file and getting unpredictable crashes to desktop, or nonsensical tech names, or some such thing.

Manual installation is OK, but a manual for manual installation is a very handy thing to have.

Yes and no... We're far from the result we eventually aim to achieve, but it should be a vast improvement compared to the regular Vanilla game. That's the plan at least. :D

Understandable, but as far as I know nobody of the dev team actually has a Mac, so that does make things a little more difficult. I know Bill Gates et al were better at marketing than originality, but they did come up with advanced tools aiding installations and such. Besides, most of the 'common users' ended up using their products instead. We will try to provide the Mac fans as best as we can, but they won't warrant a main effort because of it. ;)

Well, I know v0.25 was a vast improvement, and since you aren't actively trying to make it worse, it will be a vast improvement even if you don't change anything. Since you did change something, it's probably even vaster.

Setting up an installer for Mac can be done; I know you guys had an installer for one of the CORE for Mac versions on HoI 1. What I don't know is how much work you had to do to accomplish that, which is why I didn't ask for that.

I just found out that there is no Doomsday 1.3 patch for the Macintosh. If so, then can I still play the version of CORE linked to above (which I gather is 0.25), and will I be able to play CORE 0.30?

Or am I stuck trying to load CORE for the straight, pre-Doomsday HoI2 if I can dig up the blasted game manual for that so that I can type in the blasted authentification code for it?

Well there is a 1.3 b1 patch for the Mac... That will probably do, but it's hard to tell since we don't have one.

Where can I find this patch? Is it in fact a Doomsday patch, and not just an HoI2 patch?

I assume that CORE will work on the patched version of Doomsday if I can find the patch in the first place. I trust you guys, and the basic files that make CORE work are independent of platform. If that weren't true, then you probably wouldn't bother making it for Mac at all, and I'd still be blundering through the vanilla-flavored darkness.

The problem lies in tracking down the patch, which I haven't been able to do using Google, haven't been able to do by looking at the websites that I would expect to have the patch, and haven't been able to do by looking at Paradox's web site.

Asking on the Doomsday board, I hear that there is no 1.3 patch for Doomsday on the Mac. Which makes me a very unhappy jester, because unless the 1.2 Mac version is somehow equivalent to the 1.3 Windows version I can't play CORE.

My mistake, it's for HoI2, not DD. :(

But according to this thread patch 1.3a should work for all versions. I'm assuming that includes the Mac.

But the download is a .exe file; Macs don't handle .exe files.

If I had the text files I could install manually (just like I do with the CORE mod). But since I gather that some of the patch affects the programming of the main Doomsday program, that may be impossible.

Ask a kind soul to extrakt to say C:\CORE, then juzt zip it up and upload for you to download?

Uploading it now onto the FTP. Hopefully Ghost will make it available for download pretty soon.

The graphics packs are something different though, given their size...

Wait; I'm not sure I follow the logic.

If I don't have the patched version of Doomsday, I can't use CORE, right?

I can download CORE. I can install the files from CORE into my existing version of Doomsday. What I can't do is download a version of the 1.3 patch for the Mac, which means that I can't use CORE versions that require the patched version of Doomsday.

What I don't understand is how your solution will help me solve my problem.

Edit: Wait. Maybe I do understand now that I think about it. Does this extraction process take the .exe file and let me upload a block of files I can transfer to my computer and install manually? And will that work? Because if the main Doomsday program is changed by the patch, then the upload only helps me if it includes the changed version of Doomsday... and I'd think that Paradox or VP would have some issues with that.

Second Edit: Umm... what and where is the FTP that Hagar is uploading to?

Well the FTP is our very own FTP. That doesn't imply that it's available from that moment on, the FTP is accessible by the Dev Team. We have to take it from there to make available for download, but are working on it.

Ah. That makes sense.

Is my edit about the extraction process correct?

Because I'm not sure I understand what you're uploading for downloading. Is it the CORE mod itself, which (I assume) isn't out for Mac yet?

And if so, then the CORE mod won't do Mac users any good if it requires Doomsday v1.3, because Doomsday v1.3 isn't out for the Mac yet as far as I can tell.

Or have I misunderstood what you're trying to do?

It's CORE 0.30 in ZIP format, and nothing else. Can't say anything about availability of patch 1.3 for the Mac... That's a Paradox issue. Given the fact that 1.3 is out for about half a year we naturally have moved towards it.
