There are two directories in this, a gfx dir and a mod-CORE2. What am I supposed to do with the gfx dir? Must I overwrite the vanilla dir?
Yes and no. The files in the gfx dir are dummies and dummies only, as the EXE only displays files of which it can actually find a file with the same name in the Vanilla file structure. The regular installer as such will add those files only if no files of the same name exist in the 'regular' DD setup. If you're not using any other mod (including graphics mods) they should be all new. But should you happen to use GIP for instance just copying those will give problems. The best is to copy the regular gfx directories over your -unzipped- CORE in Color gfx folder, then copy them back. Alternatively you can install each directory separately and choose NOT to overwrite existing files.

Obviously I would be very grateful to Paradox should they decide to actually fix that bug...

thanks for explaining that. So does the latest CORE work well with GIP?
So in short: yes. :D
