I think that the difficulty in setting realistic combat pace time is not in combat duration itself (3 params in misc.txt can do the job) but in the consequences of it. I see mainly three points :
1. Possibility to bring reinforcement in the field : movement speed definitely need to be adequate, because if for instance having a defense position in dunkerque you can bring reinforcement from paris in a one or two days battle, i guess there is something wrong. After all the art of wargame, is to guess where the main attack will happen and place reserve accordingly, not to far away.
2. MP loss : Lengthly battle often mean higher loss, based on game engine. It's important to ensure battle don't look like ww1.
3. Dogpile effect : Raising combat length generally imply to raise SA, HA, defensiveness or toughness unit value. What is important i think is to keep a good winning ratio, a 3:1 in plain/clear looks realistic to me.
Anyway, good luck to the modders, this is not an easy task
