Hi,

I've been playing a GC as England (UK version 1.07) up until around 1540ish and now my main save and both autosaves won't load. The loading gets up to "reading scenario", then I ctd.

I've tried reinstalling and repatching, but no joy, and I can load an older save game from 1435 with no problems, so it seems to me that the saves must have become corrupted somehow.

Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this and how to fix?

Did you do any editting of the save game file at all (however minor)? Did you update the patch midway through this game or is it a new game played right from 1419 onwards? Have you disabled the start-up Binkplayer (renamed the avi folder to avi_old) in case it's a simple memory overwrite issue? Do you still have a copy of the corrupt save game file? Do you get any particular error message when it CTDs?

Thanks for the reply.

Nope, no editing at all. New game started wth 1.07 installed. Just tried disabling Binkplayer, but it made no difference. No error message, just straight to desktop, and it always seems to be at the same point in the loading process for all three saves.

As I played through about 40 years before saving, my gut feeling is that something might have happened in the game that has mucked things up, as this would explain why the autosaves also don't work.

I still have all three saves if they are of any use.

Sounds like the most probable scenario, although it shouldn't much things up in most cases.

Could you e-mail one of those corrupted save games to me (perhaps the last one) and I'll have a look. Use the e-mail addy in my sig - compressed if possible, please.

Well, I've been looking through the files for the last hour or so but I can't find anything obvious. Unfotunately it could be something so small and hard to find that it would be virtually impossible for me to find it. It definitely CTDs on my system as well...and I've now tried loading it under an older 1.05 and 1.06 installation, as well as my "retail" 1.07 and beta installs.

Sadly, all I can suggest is tryng to play again from you last good save and set the autosave to "yearly" and also do a separate manual save every five years or so. If you get a crash or save game that won't load then start working back through your saves until you find one that works again. If you do that somewhat methodically then maybe we can locate the cause. Ideally, note down as many details of anything you've done recently when it crashes (maybe a random event or a scripted one...maybe sent a colonist or a started converting a province's religion...whatever springs to mind).

Sorry that I can't offer a better solution than this. :(

Might take a while as the last good save I have is in 1435, and it will take even longer if HOI 1.4 comes out any time soon ;) However, if you think it is worth doing to try and track down the bug I will give it a go.

Thanks a lot for your effort in trying to help me.

My pleasure. Hopefully it was a "one of" instance that won't recurr.

Incidentally, you might want to defragment your drive if you haven't down so recently, just in case that was the cause of the original problem.

The same thing happens to me and it's really pissing me off

A game as Byz, EEP, 1.07, every time I load a game that's saved after the year 1467 it crashes. Unfortunately, after spending days on this, I saved all three files of this campaign. Now none work. ****

I know that there are/were a number of bugs in the EEP events that needed to get fixed. Most likely one of these is at fault. You'll have to ask about fixes in the EEP forum though.

Yikes! That's very unfortunate. Make sure you report what happened to the EEP folks so they can try to figure out what happened and how to fix it.

Hmm... I have that same problem. Playing as England, 1.07, ctd right about 1540. I've checked to logs to see if there are any events firing then, nope. It's shortly after Henry VIII ditches his wife and the pope along with her, but that event varies within a certain time period. I've gone back to several different saves at various times and played until 1540, and every time, ctd. I even went back to a save from the 1460's and played until 1540--ctd.

I just noticed that the event for the Act of Supremecy has a deathdate of jan 1 1541. Don't know if that has anything to do with it, but the AoS always comes before the ctd--sometimes a couple years before.

Okay, sorry for the delay, MrT is away for awhile.

Do you have any mods installed?

I have seen something that is either very similar or perhaps the same symptoms.

I file where I was playing as Byzantium after reaching 1447 ceased to operate and crashes to desktop after loading. My brother had a file where he was playing as Austria and after reaching around 1521 or so his file ceased to function also.

I have Windows XP.
My brother uses Windows 98.

This might provide some clue to solving the problem perhaps.

Thanks for the info but without knowing what was going on, your full system specs ... It does not provide much info. random stuff is very hard to track down.
