Could not initialise video

I'm getting this issue with HOI2 Doomsday too!

Unable to play two amazing games, and its killing me!

I open the game, my screen turns off and on for a few seconds, then I get the message:-

fatal error, could not initialise video

abort, retry, ignore.

the game CTD then no matter what I choose.


I'm running xp pro (5.1 build 2600)
amd sempron 3300 2ghz processor
2560mb ram
ati radeon x850 gfx card

if anyone could help, I'd be immensely grateful!

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Make sure you have the latest patch for the game.
2) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
3) Set the color depth to 16BIT
4) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
5) Run a Virus check and a Adware/Spybot checker
6) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-4.

I was just struck with the same problem.

It just came out of nowhere. I was playing Eu2, but then I had to check something on the net, so i saved and closed the game down. When I started the game again I got that messege, even before something else had happend. Just when the screen turns blackand the intro is suppoused to start. (it is supposed to start, I have renamed the AVI dir).

And this is not the first time. Unfortunatly, i don't remember how i fixed it last time.

Often if the DirectX fails to reset itself after the game finishes it can lead to that problem. Usually a reboot solves it though.
Is this not the case here?

In my case, yes.
