I did t see the video DD, so I may have missed something.

It is my understanding that the steppe can be expanded by nomads under certain conditions. Other than letting them graze herds and so on, what does that do to the existing holdings?

And what are the options for non-nomads to expand into the steppe?

Yes, we don’t want the Byzantines annexing everything from Kiev to Syr Darya, but I’m thinking about my options as a mercenary or tribal in Siberia or Bactria

I got the mild impression that this is one area where its unchanged from CK2. Meaning that steppe counties don't have holdings for the most part, so settled powers would have to embark on a long term project of conquering land and building holdings. Otherwise they just lose any directly held land in the steppe upon succession. It should be harder now for any AI to take over the steppe.

Yeah, this is my expectation until it's clarified. Unless you building holdings in the county, you'll lose it on succession.

So, I didn't really miss anything. Nothing concrete has been said on the topic yet. But a modification on the CK2 system would be a good bet.

Hmm...

Am I misunderstanding or can you add basically the entire continental map to, say just the western steppe? And then when the western steppe has a seasons the entire rest of the map would have that season too.

In a way adding areas of the map to the steppe could add seasons to the whole map? Imagine getting snow in africa that way lol.

Since they seemed to be testing other nomads as an optional rule can nomadic regions overlap or is it only one allowed?

I am under the impression that the expanding the steppe decision only allows for areas neighboring the steppe to become part of the steppe. Only areas that can have nomadic government types can have seasons the way it is right now. There will probably be some hard limits on how much the steppe can expand.

The optional nomadic areas will have seasons that make sense for them, so no snow in African nomadic areas.

@apollo1989vieten Do you mean to say you think only the areas directly neighbouring the original steppe could be expanded into?

If they do a nordic nomadic area like they implied in the dev diary it would border the steppe wouldn't it? I wonder how they would interact.

I don’t think they would border unless you expand the steppe to the northern Russia region. I am pretty sure the optional regions would have their own climate system separate from the three steppe zones. The arctic “steppe” region would include Sami territory and related cultures.

I hope they consider not adding that region because unlike Sahara or Arabia it doesn't make sense for the time period.

I don't disagree with the second part.

But your interpretation of expanding the steppe mechanic is very different than mine. Guess we'll find out.

I can't help but wonder about the implementation edge cases.
