In the game there are 5 colonial powers. 3 big ones (Spain, France and England) and 2 smaller ones (Portugal and Holland). These countries get an added bonus when deciding the succes rates of establishing trade posts of colonies. Add to that the fact they have about 90% of all conquistadors/explorers and their chances of establishing a colony succesfully is about 50% bigger than any non traditional colonial power. Certain areas are also easier to be colonised by one power than another. The English have good bonuses for establishing colonies in North America while for example Portugal has a better chance to get a TP empire going in Brazil.

I noticed this after playing a GC as Portugal and one as Brandenburg. Colonizing Brazil as Portugal went very smoothly while it was an uphill struggle with Brandenburg, which doesn't have too many colonists in the first place. I then tested a bit more and this was very clear. Colonisation is very predetermined.

Now I'm making a scenario in which I added a new country and I want that to be a minor colonial power like Portugal and Holland. Now I was wondering if this somewhere could be changed or is this, like the default generals ratings, uneditable ?

You forgot Russia. They are a HUGE colonial power.

None of the files that I've looked at had the colonial information, which would suggest it's hardcoded. But I might have missed something.

AI files have colonization preference ( zone, rates, choice between TD and colony).

Colonists file has number of colonists by period.

Saw this thread was opened by Bib and then happened that LAurent had the most recent post.

Just sauntering in here to see if I can pick up some more history tidbits. :)

No, didn't forget about them. They colonize a lot but they're not seen as a colonial power with added bonuses. Instead of that all countries get an overall bonus when it comes to Siberia. And I happened to be interested in the bonuses the other 5 get.

I also came to the conclusion it's hardcoded but this thing laurent mentioned might be valuable to tinker with. Mind u, I tried before to no avail but this is in another way so there's hope :)

Still no obvious hints of success rates but more direction of expansion. The number of colonists can be easily achieved with being reformed/wharf. 3 a year is more than enough or a small country.

Fooled ?

I've tried meddling with the colonists file in order to prevent most of the world to be colonized by 1550 - by reducing the # of colonists available to what seem more reasonable (see below)

1560;1;1;5;100;5;1;0;1;1;75;5;5;1;1;1;1;

But I must say that Im now in 1600 and most of N-A is already british, most of S-A is spanish and so on. I, as Brandeburg (Ive almost completed the creation of the Greater German Reich - 300 years prior I might add) have one colony in Africa (Dakar) and several trade posts ... So it must be hardcoded.

there is too the number of colonists for each nation in the scenario file to lower.
