Obviously the Lombards had no ideas of the vast empires of the east, roman history, or anything really. Who cares about the serfs or foreigners amirite?

They had more admiration for Greeks as a race than for Romans. Greeks have a country. They saw Romans up close, under their yoke. Why would you choose to be associated with the latter, when you can be associated with the former?
