Hello there,

i'm playing EU Rome Gold edition, fresh install, patched up to 2.31c beta on windows xp sp3.

Recently tried to install a mod that changes the map. Therefore i cleaned out the map\cache\province_textures folder as adviced. Game started and as soon as it told me "creating textures for province 238" it CTDed.

After some unsuccessful meddling with it i decided to play vanilla again and cleared out my cache folder completely.
Correct me if i am wrong but the game is supposed to re-create the files within these folder anew if they are missing, isn't it?
As soon as i reached "creating textures for province 238" it crashed.

A fresh install worked fine, but if i delete the files within province_textures it crashes again as explained above. (Tried both clearing the whole cache folder and just keeping the folders, deleting the files; neither worked)

I would really like to try some mods, so i would like to find a solution to this problem.

Thanks in advance.

Bernard

You are only supposed to delete the files in the /map/cache/ folder, and leave the sub-folders in there alone. I think you'll pretty much have to uninstall and reinstall all over again - make sure you move any valued save games elsewhere first though.

Thanks for your answer.

Deleting only the files in \map\cache\ (leaving \province_textures\ untouched) works fine when starting vanilla EUR VV 2.31c. No problem there.

As soon as i try to start the mod, the game crashes after "creating the world". Even if i don't touch any files (or only the path ones).
Same if i delete the files within \province_textures\ (the *.dds). Even when starting vanilla afterwards.
The game should recreate these files at startup, right?

My game is playable in vanilla and i know you don't officially tech-support mods, but it seems to be a vanilla issue (assuming the game should recreate the *.dds files).
As the modding community, in my opinion, is what makes your games as great as they are, it would be kind if you could offer some advice here.

Thanks.

P.S.: Tried the same installation at another pc, this time with vista. Game creates the files just fine. Both vanilla and mod. used the same installation procedure. Any ideas why it crashes on my pc? Windows issue? Missing drivers? I'm clueless...

If you have Vista or Win7, and are not running as admin, the game can only write the files out to the virtual store not the real directory. To fix that you need to at least run the game as admin, preferably uninstall it and reinstall outside the system path, like c:\games\rome .

Sorry, no ideas on XP, it should work just fine (and does elsewhere). The game can obviously create files on your machine (such as save games and vanilla .dds files) so I doubt it's a Windows issue. Perhaps the mod didn't install properly or something? I'd ask for help in the forum for the mod you're having the problem with.

Have you tried other mods?
