  • Crusader Kings II
Hey guys and gals.

Recently bought CKII after seeing so many great things on it, but for the life of me I cannot get this damn game to start. I have researched and tried everything I have found: Reinstalling, compatibility settings, and steam options (one thing I cannot figure out is how to disable the intro video...no idea where that file it). My drivers are up to date, everything is certainly more than "minimum" for this game, and I cannot figure out why this thing wont work. It will open the launcher, open the game, and then the game plays some music and begins to load everything up to Graphics, after which the game crashes and Windows tries to "find a solution to the problem."

Any suggestions at all?

Thanks!

Presumably you're playing on an HDTV monitor. See if you can get a 50hz refresh rate on it, which is I believe the minimum the game supports. If not, they you'll have to play on a standard PC monitor I'm afraid.

Can I see a new dxdiag.txt taken under those conditions please? But we have had some issues with folks using HDMI cables under some (as yet unidentified) conditions; can you try with a VGA cable instead?

Jeez, OK. Try this: uninstall the game from Steam. Manually delete the CK2 directories from under the Steam AND MyDocuments folders, now reinstall the game via Steam.

Still not doing anything. I then also tried uninstalling via the control panel, and then reinstalled, etc. Same result. "Cannot load texture..." I have no idea what is causing this, but I've reinstalled this game probably seven or eight times now. =/

Right, but the critical part was manually deleting the remnants of CK2 under BOTH the Steam directory AND the MyDocuments area before reinstalling - you definitely did that?

The errors you get in error.log are normal and nothing to do with your problem.

Did you try Solution #6 in the sticky "known problems" thread above?

I did have success with one customer recently who had a similar situation to you, by having them uninstall all Steam games and Steam itself, manually deleting all traces of Steam and its games, then installing Steam and CK2 again from scratch.

Yes, I did remove them. The steam removes the folder from it's files, so no need for removing that on my own, and I removed the folder from My Documents. Both were gone, the game was reinstalled, and nothing.

I tried the tip from that thread to no avail. Hoping another install will work...

Here the critical thing is that the whole of the Steam client application gets uninstalled and cleaned up - hope that helps you too!

That is a ridiculous "fix" for this game. Why would I uninstall all of my games on a whim? You can't even assure me that it will work.

Please fix this issue, as it is preposterous and completely senseless. Y'all clearly have no idea what is causing this issue, and I can only hope for a fix for a game that looks amazing, but has really pissed me off, and I haven't even gotten to play it yet.

As we don't know what your problem is it's going to be hard to fix it. This kind of thing has usually turned out to be a problem with particular hardware, or a bad game installation. But frankly I see no evidence of either in your case.

Which is why I suggested the thing with re-installing the whole of Steam. That did fix exactly this situation with one customer, who I'd been trying to help for weeks. But if you don't want to try that, well, I don't really have anything else to suggest. Do you have access to any other machine, to at least satisfy yourself that the game does fundamentally work (as it does for most people, I assure you!) ? Oh, and did you ever try the demo on this problem machine?

Well, I went and installed it on my shitty laptop, aaaaaand it's working. Which makes so little sense, as this laptop is not a gaming laptop by any stretch of the term. Jittery, but it runs. Now, why would that be? My rig is pretty up to date and current, and I can't figure out why it would not be able to start the game at all.
