I've been getting a crash whereby the screen freezes up and the music begins to skip (like a CD that is stuck)... this lasts about 5 seconds and then the computer reboots. Any thoughts? I have an ASUS laptop (2.5 Ghz, 4mb RAM, ATI Mobile Radeon 3650 graphics card). My video drivers are up to date.

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista/Win7 and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista/win7 to a non-system directory, like c:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis - Rome\, where [name] is your Vista/Win7 user name. You may have to search your C: drive for them.

Does the crash only happen after you've been playing for a while? Or can it sometimes happen immediately you start the game? It does sound like a driver, hardware or overheating problem.

The crash sometimes happens within 5-10 min of playing, but sometimes never happens. Never happens before i actually start playing.

Your video driver is old, please get the latest from ASUS - ideally a late 2009 or 2010 one.

Can we see the system.log file please?

And let's check further on the temperatures; please report the CPU and video temps 1/ before you start playing them 2/ after, say, 10 minutes' of play. If ASUS give you no way of monitoring temps, Google for and install SPEEDFAN.
