The program crashes just as it reaches the main menu. The resulting error message is very vague; no explanation, only that the game has stopped working and that Microsoft will let me know if they ever find a solution (I'm not holding my breath). If this cannot be fixed in the next few days, I'll have to return the game to the store. Here is the dx diagnostic; any help would be appreciated

I was able to maintain both directx versions, though it showed only Direct X 10 in dxdiag, but Rome could run.

and with the problem.
It seems that all games that I run with vista crash, so I don't know if it is a vista thing that you and I share :eek:o

You don't downgrade DirectX, you install DX 9.0c in addition to DX 10. I suspect you haven't done that as your DXDIAG does not show any video drivers, for instance; that will be why the game can't run.

You could try installing the latest video driver (http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32 if your Vista is 32bit) and see if it them appears in DXDIAG, otherwise you should try installing DX 9.0c from the Rome CD or the link in the thread above http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=351293 .

I'm not really sure, as you seem to have a Windows/DirectX problem. You could post your Rome settings.txt and system.log files, but I doubt we can help until DirectX sees the video drivers. You may have to post on a MS support forum, unless someone more Windows-savvy than I happens to drop in here.

I do see that Vista SP1 is supposed to install DirectX 10.1 (and DXDIAg above only shows 10), did you have any problem installing SP1?
