Crash on launch [solved]

Hey!

I have a crash on launch, no launcher, no music. I just press play, my Steam icon turns green for 2 seconds, then blue.

I have two screen, one in 1920x1080, the other 2560x1080. I've tried unplugging the second one.
I've updated my drivers, DirectX, I've tried compatibility mode, I've tried running as admin, I've verified the cache, rebooted my PC, reinstalled the game twice.

I have no mod, nothing in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris.

My PC is a laptop, with both Intel Graphics and an NVidia GTX 860m. I have Windows 10.

Did you try changing the game to windowed mode?

Since I didn't have access to the launcher, I tried using -windowed as a Steam launch option. No dice!

If you go to ...\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Stellaris you can fiddle with the settings in the .txt file there. Try setting a resolution appropriate to your screen and change to windowed mode.

I don't have the folder, sadly. If I create it, add a settings.txt which I will copy afterwards, it still doesn't work!

I honestly have no idea what may be causing this. Have you tried reinstalling, verifying game cache, restarting steam and the whole thing?

Also, if you go into your Steam folder on the computer and run stellaris.exe by "running as administrator"?

Yeah, it's quite a tough bug to chase, what with the no error log nor even the launcher showing up..

I've tried all that, no dice. I'll try to keep you updated if I ever find a way to get the thing working.. If you want me to test other things, I'm ready to!
I've seen a few people on Reddit with a very similar if not identical problem.

Are you using the nvidia card and not the intel card?

100% sure. However, I have fixed the issue - hurray!
BitDefender anti-ransomware protection was stopping Stellaris from being able to write to My documents, without any prompt. Adding Stellaris as an exception fixes the lot!

Having a similar issue. Go to launch game, looks like it wants to launch and then abruptly stops and the application seems to have crashed. Doesn't even get to the launcher. There appear to have been .dmp files created for each failed launch.

same issue, not using bitdefender, and also getting .dmp files for every launch.
