Crash on loading

I've got the following problem which keeps comming up. Im playing HoI2 using version 1.3a without a problem for a few times. Then suddenly when starting the game, it crashes when it's Initializing the graphics. It looks like the size of the .exe file changed from something like 2.988kB to 3.162kB. Now maybe the .exe get's corrupted and causes the game to crash on loading. But I didn't have any problems while playing the game which could be the started of the .exe getting corrupted.

Just copying the old .exe over the corrupted one makes the game work again, but that's just an annoyance. I could post the crash log, tho it's pretty huge.

Playing on windows XP, with an Ati Radeon 9500 Pro.

When you say the EXE changes, is that just the result of applying the patch?
And the "original EXE you replace it with is that the One from the CD or the one from 1.3A patch?

It's Not the result of applying the patch. And when im replacing it with the original one and then run the patch again.
 
The EXE should never be altered, except by applying a patch.
Theirfore I would check your system for Viruses.

Also What publisher version is this? the publishers logo should be on the CD beside the Paradox logo.
