Indeed, i doubt the game will run without them!

In which case you may be intrigued to know that it does indeed run without them. That being said, I do get an issue that may well be the "stutter" described by other players, so I will be installing the proprietary drivers, to see if that makes a difference.

EDIT: installed proprietary drivers, stutter is not entirely gone, but far less than it was with open-source drivers. Quite playable.

I'm not surprised the game runs with the opensource drivers, nor am I surprised the proprietary drivers perform better.

I am surprised. AMD invested a lot in opensource drivers and (not only) Valve games run better on opensource.
