Crash to Desktop

I am running Windows Vista. I've installed Hearts of Iron II: Doomsday and Armageddon, as well as the 1.3 Beta 2 patch. My game was set to English by default, but I wanted to change it to French. I did this by modifying settings.cfg, changing "0" to "1". Now, however, when I run the game, it always crashes after a few months. I never had this problem when I tried running it in English.

Is this a problem specifically with the 1.3 Beta 2 patch, or is it impossible to change the language without it crashing? Would I be able to change the language to French with version 1.2?

CTD when pressing unit detail icon

Hi, I just love this game, recently bought it. The coolest and most realistic grand scale WW2 game I have ever played!
It works fine but I run into CTD ones and a while. It is always related to pressing a unit icon to get more details about it. A ship, a division, or and air wing. I does noe happens every time but since I do not know when I have started to avoid it, hence missing useful and interesting details like type of Tank model, previous kills by the unit etc.

Summary:
Plain HOI version 3.1a. Just added 3.1b but that did not change anything related to this report.
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core processor 5000+
2 Gbyte RAM
ADI Radeon 4600 Series

Anyone else that has ran into this?
