Hi.

After reading all the crashes issues and possible fixes in this sub-forum, I've deemed necessary to start my own thread about this crash I'm having, cause I find it different from the issues reported and fixed in these threads.

Rome Gold 2.32c (IYID) purchased yesterday on Steam, playing on WinXp 32-bit

I've played the game (my first campaign) without any issue for about 3 hours, getting to the year 798 AUC, but then I started to suffer a crash sending me to the desktop over and over again.

Apparently it always happens on December 5, 798 AUC. I've tried using any of the savegames I have around that date (June, August, October, 798)

I've also tried deleting the cache files and/or reinstalling the game, but to no avail. I have to point out, though, that after doing it, I got a "Runtime error" message at the restart of the game, after which I restarted again without further problem. This has happened three times.

Notice that I've tried starting a new game with a different nation and apparently I can run it just fine, at least for 20-something minutes. But I'm afraid to just start a new campaign and suffer the same issue 25 years into the game.

Suggestions? Thanks. If any more data is needed about my game version, system or savegame, please tell.

Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt and Rome/logs/system.log files. Note that if you use Vista/Win7 and have installed the game in the suggested folder c:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Rome\, the active versions of these last two files will have been redirected by Vista/win7 to a non-system directory, like c:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Europa Universalis - Rome\, where [name] is your Vista/Win7 user name. You may have to search your C: drive for them.

Also, you could try the 2.35 beta - copy your 2.32 installation to somewhere new (say c:\games\rome-beta\ ) and extract the beta so it overwrites that copy. Then test your problematic same game in there.

Thanks, there you go. Notice I put the system.log file inside a compressed format because I wasn't able to attach it otherwise.

I'll try the beta, then.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

UPDATE: Switched to beta 2.35. The crash has changed its MO slightly, but it persists. The exit to desktop used to happen instantly, now the game freezes and the music loops for some 3 seconds before crashing.

New video driver for you http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/43994

If that doesn't help, try deleting the FILES ONLY (NOT DIRECTORIES) in your Rome /map/cache/ directory.

That aside I don't see a lot wrong in there. If it always crashes at that one point in this one save game file, it may be a bug. It shouldn't happen in the version you have but you could check for this bug in the save file.

If none of that bears fruit, maybe just post a link to the problem save on any public file hosting site, and hopefully some kind soul will a/ confirm that you game does or does not crash for them and b/ look into the file itself and see if they can see any problem in there.

Unfortunately nothing has worked. Thanks for all the suggestions, though.

I don't mind that badly about this particular campaign, but being my first experience with the game, I just hope it's an isolated issue and it does not repeat itself when I play a new campaign.

Here's a link to download the savegame anyway, in case someone wants to check it out.
