This is the exact problem I have. I can do anything but click on a unit. It's a shame since I really would love to play, it seems great. Just can't click on a unit :(

I have updated the sound and video drivers as far as I could (Which wasn't very far, apparently the last time sony updated the video drivers was a while ago). I have the directx 9c, I've installed the patch and have winows service pack 2, I think. Nothing seems to work.

Could it be that the developers just didn't make the game 100% compatible with our video cards (especially obscure, specially-designed laptop video cards)? I remember when Civ4 first came out there was a similar problem, but it was fixed relatively quickly.

Although I don't know if that is likely if the only time my game crashes is when I select a land or sea unit. Again, I can do ANYTHING else in the game...I can send diplomats, I can create trade routes, call in allies, appoint governors, make sacrifices, select all the different map types (political, diplomatic, religious etc), appoint generals and admirals. ...Anything!

The games are written according to the DirectX 9.0c API, so if there are compatibility issues, they are caused by either DX 9 itself, the drivers for the hardware or the hardware itself.

Has everyone gone through all the items in the sticky thread titled " Any Crash, read this first!" above?

Yes, at least i have. Latest intel -drivers, uninstalled and reinstalled. Patched the game. Even reinstalled game & patch several times. Everything else runs smoothly, only that i can´t select units.
Maybe it is time for pacifist -type of game, a game without military?

Maybe problem has to do with that shiny ring that appears around unit when selecting one. It somehow fails to load properly and crashes the game? Or something..

I also did everything in the sticky thread.

That's a possibility, Zeitkugel. Is there any way we could remove that effect? Maybe I should make a post on the mod forum.

The person in this thread found a solution in newer drivers from Omega, so that'd be worth trying.

For example their nVidia XP drivers are here . As I understand it these are the latest official nVidia drivers, altered so they will install on proprietary platforms such as many laptops.

This does not work, as there are no Omega -drivers for crap-intel adapters. ;)

on Omega there is no drivers for Intel video
and
all who here wrote - the owners of Intel video

Quite right, my apologies. I guess you should check with Intel and your laptop maker for updates on a regular basis, aside from that we'll have to hope 1.2 fixes this. I'll post a reminder backstage.

Any news about this, will it be fixed in the next patch or is there a way to disable "shiny ring" -feature that seems to crash the game. Btw, latest intel drivers for Q965/Q963 are dated 3/20/2008 and can be found here

Sorry no, there is no way to disable it at the moment :(
Working on a fix for it.

I have the exact same problem

I have the exact same problem as you. My EU Rome would crash when I click on an unit. When I looked at the event viewer, I get

Faulting application romegame.exe, version 1.0.0.0, faulting module d3d9.dll, version 5.3.2600.2180, fault address 0x000f9620.

And yes, my video adapter is an on board Intel display adapter belonging to the 945 GV Express Chipset.

Thanks,
