Summary

Crash when I click on a character

Description

Frequently, but not every time, when I click on a character to go to that character's profile, it crashes the game. This occurs whether I click on the hyperlinked character name or their picture.

Steps to reproduce

In any pop-up window that displays another character's linked image or linked name, click on the image or name. It should take you to that character's profile. Instead, it crashes the game.

Hello there! Thank you for the report. It unfortunately wasn't clear what the issue was. Could you provide more information, full crash folder and if possible a way to reproduce the issue?

ive had this periodically as well. windows, steam, current version. it did it in the previous versions too sometimes. seems to happen completely at random

theres not much i can provide that would be very helpful unfortunately. it might have something to do with the bug that makes people not have faces sometimes but thats pure speculation based on nothing, really just spitballing here

Same problem here (Steam under Linux): Sporadic crashes, always linked to opening a character screen.

how do you switch to proton? complete newbie here, thanks
hi there not sure about Steamdeck, for anyone on Mac I am sorry to say Proton is a Linux thing
also looked at the known issues they suggest a rollback to 1.11.0 instead, that is probably smarter.

on Desktop I can right-click the game -> Properties -> Compatibility -> then activate the compatibility tool.

when I google it it seems to be about the same:
"Here's how to do it: get to the screen with the play button, there's a setting cog on the right. Select it, then Properties, Compatibility, Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool."

short note on Proton, when you activate it you use the Windows version of the game, which is why this seems to be a workaround for this specific bug for me.
for me, this also meant that only my cloud saves showed up, if you have local saves maybe just wait for the hotfix.
furthermore, you should probably switch back when this bug is fixed.

hope this helps

Any solution?

I have this exact same problem. It's been over a month with constant crashes like those described here.

Same problem, but it seems to happen also when I click on a province (but seems less frequent).
Yes, certainly my crashes are not limited to character mousing / selection, but it seems like about 90%+ of them are. The majority of the remainder seem to happen during decision-making. If I leave the game paused and walk away from the computer, I have not noticed any crashes.
