Summary

Crashes after starting new campaign

Description

I recently downloaded Victoria 3 via Steam and have been unable to play it since doing so. When I try to start a new game, it goes through the loading menu, but once the game actually begins it crashes before the graphics load on the screen. I tried deleting and re-installing Steam, launching the game directly from Finder rather than Steam, and restarting my computer, but none of these methods have worked.

I am using MacOS Monterey Version 12.6.5 (21G531) on a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015).

The support staff said of my error log files (copied below): "The possible cause of these errors could be the corruption of the specific game/save due to the presence of a faulty mod." But this can't be the case because I have not been able to save any game files or add any mods.

[12:39:15][jomini_script_system.cpp:262]: Script system error!
Error: Invalid left side during comparison 'var'
Script location: file: common/scripted_effects/00_victoria_scripted_effects.txt line: 2652 file: common/history/global/00_global.txt line: 36

Steps to reproduce

1. Start Steam, 2. Launch Victoria III, 3. Select new campaign and relevant options (e.g., country, etc.) and launch game, 4. Game crashes when the loading screen is finished but before the game actually starts.

This is actually something for Tech Support, which replies pretty promptly, so let's move the post over there.

This machine has a Intel Iris Graphics 6100, but the minimum requirements include AMD® Radeon™ R9 M380 (2GB)

I'm afraid the game will no longer run on Macs with Intel video systems - that has never been supported hardware for this game since launch, it is just a matter of luck that it used to run. With the latest update the game only uses Vulkan as a renderer (not openGL any longer) which pretty much requires AMD video systems and drivers in MacOS.

You can try updating MacOS to the very latest to get a newer Intel video driver from Apple, but if that doesn't work all you can do is revert the game to the previous version 1.10.2 in the Steam betas tab for the game. Hopefully you have or can get access to supported hardware to run the game properly at some point. OR if you have Apple Bootcamp installed, try running the game under Windows there.

Or if you've just bought the game, seek a refund from that store.

Sorry for the bad news!

I suspected that might be a problem. Thanks for taking a look anyway and for the suggestions!
