My game keeps exiting spontaneously. My system: 256 MB RAM, 20 GB HD, 1Ghz Clockspeed, Windows XP, and 1.02 patch. Any insight?

these are called CTDs (crash to desktop). Experiencing a few here and there after long hours of play is normal, but it shouldn't be very frequent. How often do you get them? Do you get them at a specific date?
Check the running problems thread, it contains a few good suggestions. Defragging the hard drive always help, making sure there are nothing in the background will also help you.

keep your hard drive defraged, also remove any programs running in the background especially any security based ones ( zone alarm,antivirus, etc etc )
