Crashes for AOW 1 from Steam

When I go to play AOW 1 on Stream, I'm riddled with errors and exception screens, some do not go away after clicking ok. I can't even get past the 3rd turn for the first map on the Campaign without an exception causing the game to keep popping the exception message or crash.

My laptop is running windows 10 64 bit, has a graphics card from the CPU and a GTX 960M, 16 gb of memory.

Is there a patch or something I need to install get the game to run properly, or I need a lower spec computer to tun the game?

You are probably talking about the "ShowScene" error message. This is easily fixed with a simple patch, you can download it here: https://github.com/int19h/aow-patch.
