The game crashes constantly. Does not seem to happen at any particular screen (e.g. when I declare war, join a crusade, form a duchy, etc). Sometimes it can run for an hour, sometimes it crashes after 10 minutes. The only error message I get is that the main CK2.exe file has stopped running.

Is this in SP or MP? I've never had a single crash using any version of the game. Have you updated your GFX driver?

It's SP. I got exactly the same problem with my Steam version. Everything is up-to-date. It doesn't matter if I play a new game or continue a save. The game just freeze, I can move the cursor and the music is still playing.

Single Player with steam. The game does not freeze (well, it kind of does for a second). I just get taken to my desktop instantly.

The game works fine besides this, which means I suspect there may be a bug... could be wrong.

I've found this in my game error log
"[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: ."

I tried to verify cache bout it doesn't help

Edit: I've heard that this happens because I use Polish language in game. That's odd

I too am experiencing a crash at seemingly random intervals.

CK2.exe ceases to function and it locks up my PC.

EDIT 1: dxdiag
EDIT 2: deleted dxdiag dump, I attached the info as a .txt file below.

After patch 1.05d was applied by Steam I too am experiencing random crashes within a few minutes of starting CK2. The screen freezes, the PC hangs, and I have to power down to reboot. In the error.log text I also see

[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .
[texturehandler.cpp:169]: Couldn't find texture file: .

I validated the Steam files and it had no effect.

please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

Yes, Polish is a problem (or was with 1.05c anyway), and you need to ask for help with the Polish publisher - or play in English.

Those "errors" are normal and nothing to do with your problem. please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). You requested "settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here." I was wondering if you could tell me where to find those log files and settings.txt...
They are all in the CK2 directories under your MyDocuments folder.

Here are the files requested. My checksum from the setup.log file is:

[ck_application.cpp:782]: Checksum is CK2 v1.05d (REVP) 1524129637

Thanks for the quick response. I've been so addicted to CK2 since it came out I guess I can use a break.

Like davmey I too have been enjoying CK2 very very much since release and have been recommending it to friends and colleagues.

I see no real problem there, although you should update that video driver http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/42437

Does this happen on new games, or only older ones started under 1.05c or earlier?

If that doesn't help try a full clean reinstall: uninstall the game from Steam and move any valued save games elsewhere. Manually delete the CK2 directories from under the Steam AND MyDocuments folders, now reinstall the game via Steam.

Hmm, no obvious problem there either, I'm afraid. Does this happen on new games, or only older ones started under 1.05c or earlier?

Let's try a full clean reinstall: If this is Steam: uninstall the game from Steam and move any valued save games elsewhere. Manually delete the CK2 directories from under the Steam AND MyDocuments folders, now reinstall the game via Steam.

If GamersGate: Move valued save games elsewhere, and uninstall the game. Manually delete the CK2 directories from where GG put them and from MyDocuments. Reinstall the game , download 1.05d patch again and apply it.

Updating my video card driver appears to have done the trick. I have played for several hours with both an old savegame and a new game, with no problems. Thanks for the tip!

This happens to both old saved games pre-1.05c and new games...
Hmmm, not an issue we are seeing in general. Your video driver is quite recent so I don't think davmey's problem is the same as yours. This definitely only started since 1.05d?

Have you tried the clean reinstall yet?

We may as well check your temperatures. Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 20 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, Google for and install SPEEDFAN.

AndrewT,

I have not yet tried a clean install, that is next on the list.

My starting temps were:
GPU 29C
CPU 23C

and I didn't make it to the 20 min mark before everything crashed. I also noticed we are at 1.05e now...

EDIT: If I had to guess I would say my GPU is overheating... I got the game going for several minutes and the GPU temps were going up past 45C before the next crash.

Yes, that looks pretty likely. Do make sure all your fans are working, no vents are blocked by dust or items next to your PC, that kind of thing.

It seems the updated driver is causing my GPU to run hotter than before... that is the only variable that has changed since before I started to notice the crashes. I have added additional heat mitigation to my rig, I will experiment with it tonight.
