I just bought Rome Gold from Gamersgate and so far I've encountered few problems:

  1. The game becomes corrupt if it runs long enough (maybe 1-2 hrs.). This results in several symptoms:
    1. Graphical errors. Textures (from panels etc.) go missing or look garbled. Also affects text on buttons etc.
    2. Some sound effects stop playing, such as closing windows etc.
    3. You can save the game at this time, but the resulting save game is corrupt. I have save games that are exactly 1024kb in size, and they seem to be cut short.
    4. If you continue playing the game will eventually crash to desktop. The error.log contains a few lines like this: Clausewitz Error[texturehandler.cpp:113]: D3DXCreateTextureFromFileEx failed for file: gfx\\interface\\siege_bg.dds with error: Ran out of memory.
  2. The error.log has entries about files that don't exist, like gfx\\interface\\VaeVictis\\bg_domestic_government_top.tga and gfx\\test\\menu_tiles_dialog_2.tga. Is this normal, or does the Gamersgate-version lack files?
  3. A recent game froze around 10th July 486, even when reloading from two different autosaves. Error.log didn't show anything special, but when it happened, cpu usage was at ~55% and memory usage was increasing steadily.
  4. Also, an error message appears when quitting, but I guess that's normal(?)

My computer should meet the system requirements:
  • Pentium 4 2,8GHz
  • 1GB ram
  • Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (9.31 legacy drivers)
  • Windows XP Pro SP3

So, can something be done about these? I attached the log files in case someone is interested.

The Gamers gate version doesn't lack files that are in the boxed version by design, but of course a download may go bad. I suggest a complete reinstall from a fresh download: First move any valued save games elsewhere. Then uninstall the game, and then manually delete the game directory - this is important. Now delete the GG download you used previously and download a fresh copy. Reinstall Rome - to choose a new directory like c:\games\rome instead of the suggested path. I'm not sure if GG's Rome:Gold comes with the 2.1 patch installed, if not install that into the same new directory.

If that doesn't help, Please run DXDIAG, Save All Info, and post dxdiag.txt here (first delete everything after the Sound Devices section so it will fit). Also post your Rome/settings.txt file.

Well, after redownload and reinstall, similar problems continue. Same files are missing and the game crashes when it runs out of memory. The game version is 2.1.

Here's dxdiag:

I have this error too. Installing the main game off of CD and then VV off of download so I don't think it's a corruption problem.

I have the same problem, using Steam though.

I have that in my error log, and although I'm running Windows 7 RC1, I highly, highly doubt that it's due to the OS...
