Eu2 1.08 is crashing constantly for me. Sometimes during the loading screen after I pick my country, but most times during play. I'm a long time player and Eu2 has always been crash prone, but I recently got a new computer and its much worse now. Every save game (I save alot) acts as if its corrupted, and immediately cuts out upon reload. I checked the basics: Renamed avi folder, 16 bit color, disable the virus program, and nothing. Here is the dxdiag if it helps.

Well the good news is you do not have the VIA drivers.

I would update the video driver, although it is not totally out of date it is still worth a shot.

The only other thing I can see is d: drive is really short of free space. Is that where EU2 is installed? If so you might try deinstalling from it there and putting it on c: .

Also, you mention 1.08 specifically, are you saying unpatched or pre-1.08 did not have this problem on the same machine?

It is only a 4.2 which he is running FAT32 on for some reason so I doubt he has EU2 on it. But stranger things have happened. :)

The wierd memory config also has me wondering, never seen any good come from mixing memory chips in XP.

EU2 is installed on c:. As far as a weird memory config, this is a brand new machine and I haven't altered it at all. d: Is a recovery partition I believe.

Also, you mention 1.08 specifically, are you saying unpatched or pre-1.08 did not have this problem on the same machine?

Well I played EU2 on my old machine through all the patches with no problems. I recently upgraded and thought I'd fire up EU2 again since I now have more RAM to spare and its been nothing but a headache.

I have never heard of a computer sold new with 448 meg ram.
That would be a 256, a 128 and a 64 chip or combination.
Hugely strange and IMHO a recipe for disaster.

How did the Video card driver update go?

You know until you mentioned it I hadn't noticed, 448. The box says 512 and it was in its original packaging, hmm. This is really the only problem iv'e had with it. Victoria performs without a hitch so i'm not sure what could cause EU2 to hiccup.

How did the Video card driver update go?

No difference as far as I could tell.. :( I appreciate your help though.

I think you have a memory hardware problem. You need to take it back to the shop and get it fixed or replaced til it shows up as 512mb.

How did the Video card driver update go?
This is not strange at all. In fact, it's working as designed.

If you look closely, MrOuija's configuration has an NVidia NForce 2 chipset, with integrated GeForce 4 MX video. This is a chipset that uses a unified memory model, which means the Video RAM is part of the main memory, instead of using separate memory chips.

His configuration lists 448 MB available main RAM, and 64 MB video RAM. 448 + 64 = 512 MB, which is probably the amount of installed RAM.

In other words, there is nothing wrong with the memory chips.

Ah now that does make sense, I only use ATI cards so I was no aware of the new NVidia Unified memory model. Thanks for pointing that out.
A little deciving to the consumer as well.

Back to the problem.
Do you have a screen saver installed and active after a certain time?

To be accurate, this is not such a new concept. Intel's chipsets support this for several years now, and most business machines are equiped with this type of video. Just power up a Compaq Deskpro from the last several years, and you'll notice similar memory size specs.

And I'm sure you still remember Commodore's C64, Apple II or Atari micro's from the '70s and '80s. All those had one set of memory, which was shared between the processor and the video logic. ;)

I just haven't seen it on anything I have used in the last 20 years.
Looks like a step backward to me but with memory speeds and costs like they are today I guess it is okay, still seems strange to go backward though. :)

For office machines, it's a cost effective method. VRAM chips are much, much more expensive than regular RAM chips. And for office work, it doesn't really matter all that much if the CPU misses out on some memory access cycles when the video logic needs to access it.

I wouldn't recommend it for gaming, though. Then you are better off using a dedicated VRAM solution, which can provide upto 30 GB/sec these days, instead of the 4.2 GB/sec solution provided by the main RAM.

Mind you, in the days of the good old Commodore C64, it didn't matter. In fact, that was the world's first DDR system, as the main CPU accessed the memory on the rising edge of the clock signal, and the video logic on the falling edge. Both CPU and video could run at full speed, despite the fact that both accessed the same memory chips. ;)

I guess where the problem come in is in the "Full speed" the C64 gave you. :D

jpd- Thanks for explaining that.

Castellon- No screensaver, anti-virus turned off. Why would I have problems running EU2 and not Victoria ? Aren't they basically the same engine ? Victoria is inherently more stable (fewer normal crashes), but EU2 is dropping off left and right.

What version of the game do you have.
Is it an original EU2 release or is it part of a package like CotN?
Who is the publisher, thier logo will be on the CD.

Some times a reboot works miracles. :)
