crashing to the desktop when starting new game (always)

Hi,

I bought EU2 today and went directly home and installed it, everything went smoothly. I even installed the patch to v1.03 without trying to play v1.02 (whether this was brilliant or stupid I'll let you decide... )

When I start the game everything seems to work like a charm, I get the different texts and movies alright and then the main menu. When I select tutorials and then any of the tutorials the game crashes (or rather exits silently) to the desktop. If I select to start a new game I get the screen with the different option and then the same thing happens when I select start.

My computer's specs:

• EU2 version: 1.03
• Processor: Pentium4/1500MHz
• Graphics card: NVidia GeForce3 64Mb
• OS: Windows XP
• Memory: 256Mb
• Free HD space: 26Gb
• Soundcard: Soundblaster Live!
• CD/DVD-drive and CD-Write drive also.
• I have read the "running problems" thread...

I've read through the support forum and haven't found anybody with exactly the same problem as I have. I've tinkered around with my computer and installed different drivers for my GeForce (v12.41 and newer and did try to use detonator destroyer) but this didn't help. I also tried disabling Norton AV 2002 and ZoneAlarm (firewall) without this making any difference.
Actually the only thing I've managed to do is that now I have the common problem with the Binkplayer (and XP) that I didn't have from the beginning... strange but true. That problem I can work around but not the CTD-problem though.

I'm a bit frustrated at the moment, haven't had these kinds of problems with any other games I've bought since I installed XP (Black & White, Kohan - immortal sovereigns, Creature Isle). Strange.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi again,

For some strange reason I had only tried playing the game on the two higher resolutions (1280 and 1024), I just now tried to play it in 800x600 and, guess what, it worked. No CTD when starting a new game. This might help in trying to find the original problem, I guess?

I would like to play the game on the highest resolution so if anyone of you have another solution to this I'm still very interested.

for XP, copy your play disc to your hard drive with one of the CD tools ("Clone CD", say). load the CCD clone with Daemon Tools to start the game at Any resolution. it's too bad that there are too many problems reading from the CD. is this a copy protection issue? i don't know. I've bought the game, but the Daemon solution loads quickly, and doesn't crash the game ever.

Thanks, perhaps I'll try this although it doesn't sound as the best way to go. I'm all for copy protection on cd-roms, but they should work well and don't cause the game to be un-playable. I'm of course not entirely conviced that copy-protection is what is causing my problem, but perhaps some of the nice support-people will supply me with a definitive answer to my questions.

I've done some more testing and I can play the game on 800x600 with any (well, the ones I've tried anyways) version of the NVidia display drivers but not any of the higher resolutions.

have you tried to disable you joystick port? Someone had the same problem and that solved his problem.

The copy protection can prevent you from starting the game (it won't work at all if you have a Toshiba CD-ROM) but it shouldn't cause the kind of problem you are having.

You could try to uninstall the game following these instructions:

then try to play with 1.02 (I assume you have the Nordic version) and see if it works; then upgrade to 1.03.

OranjeMike's message hinted me to the proper solution (that it was the copy protection causing the problems) and after following the steps outlined in:

everything worked like it should. I went back here to write this down and found out that viper37 had written a message stating approximately the same thing. Thanks to you both for the quick help!

Now I guess it's back to finally playing the game! Rejoice!
