I paid for this game and it's been going very well so far, but I am SO sick of having to return to the Paradox forums because something always goes wrong.

Crusader Kings II, haven't had a problem until the recent patch. I have been playing with a savegame that I've had for hundreds of ingame years.. now, it crashes every time I attempt to load either the autosave or last savegame.

Cmon.. Paradox..

Is this a game started before 1.05? If so, it will not be 100% compatible with 1.05 and we shouldn't be surprised by problems.

That dxdiag looks basically fine; there is a slightly newer video driver that you might try if you get the same problems with a newly-started game too.

obviously it's from before the update, that is when the game came out. how in the hell is it not compatible with it's own game? that makes no sense, if paradox seriously went to the extent of "modding" the game to the point where our savegames arent even SAFE. that is unbelievable, this isn't exactly their first game either. these problems should not be occurring.

I want to play my game which I've dedicated over 20 hours towards.. how can I play it with the new update?

(((( EDIT ))))

also, if there is another update released after this one? will I have to run the fear of having to restart my game again?

compatibility of savegames is never guaranteed and resuming them is not advised after a patch. considering how programs work and what patching does that cannot be avoided and is hardly surprising.

Games started under any 1.05 version will be playable under any other 1.05 version (1.05c at the moment). In general games are also compatible between major patch levels, say 1.04 to 1.05, but this can never be 100% guaranteed, in this case I'd say due to the large number of changes.

What you could try is copying your 1.05c installation elsewhere (say c:\games\ck2-1.04\ ) , and get the 1.04 GG patch and install it over that copy of 1.05 . I'm not completely sure that would work but it's worth a shot.

The whole premise of this idea makes no sense, the game is based on creating a file at the beginning of the game and playing it. The game tells us that we will be playing this save file throughout the entire game. Now a patch is released to improve our game, our game which is our save file. Yet we can't play our save file? aka the game? wtf?!??? absolutely no sense at all, don't release a patch if it doesn't work with "the game."

It could be related to a title in the game not existing any more, it could be that the patch, (which rewrote sections of the main .exe since several parts of the game work differently) is now treating a war or an ongoing plot in such a way that it won't load a particular save. I'd imagine that if there was a crusade in progress (or possibly a jihad) it'd be likely to break since they are treated very differently after the patch.

I had a save where I held the kingdom of Brythonia - that's gone now, and the save reverted to me being king of Wales, since that's what the title has been reflagged as. Fortunately I held the relevant land, so the game didn't go mad about that.

Functionally, there isn't a great deal that can be done if you actually want improvements and bug fixes to the game, since most of these will involve changing parts of the game engine, and if you change parts of the game engine, it can mean that saves can stop making sense to the game engine. Changing the text files that the game reads can also mean that a save stops making sense, especially if something like a plot changes, or a character changes dynasty (because he's now/no longer a bastard), but the game is calling/reading a dynasty that doesn't exist (for example the dynasty he was in had him as the sole example, and because it isn't needed, it's been removed).

What if rendering some old games incompatible is necessary in order to fix a problem in the previous patch? Just leave the problem there, you think? IMO it "makes sense" in that circumstance.

I had the same problem with the game crashing shortly after loading an old save game. It was due to an active crusade. Older saves therefore worked fine. But I think I could solve the issue and use my current save: I first tried to end the crusade quickly, but was not allowed to give up. It did however postpone the crash to a few seconds after leaving that crusade screen. So I tried saving this game on a new save. After loading this new save I sped up the game and the crusade ended shortly after, the screen saying I won, the message saying it ended without any results. The latter really happened, which is not completely fair, since I was losing that crusade, but after that, I could save the game, play the game, etc. - all without any further crashes so far. There may a similar solution for you or anyone else having this problem, so I think it's worth trying this out.
Maybe only loading your current game (1.04 save) and saving it quickly again in a new file already solves the problem. Why that would help, I don't know, but I will try that now. I was just so happy I apparently found a solution, I had to quickly share it with you guys. ;)
