I'm using HOI 1.01
WinXp Home SP1 5.1.2600.1605
Dell DIM4400 Intel Pentium 4 1.7 GHz
with 256MB RAM
8,79 GB free on my HDD
Video: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 DriverVersion 6.14.10.7184 with 64MB RAM
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Live DriverVersion 5.12.0001.3511
DirectX v9.0c 4.09.0000.0904

I've recently reformatted my hdd and now I've installed HOI2 again (it was just working fine before) but when I at the singleplayer menu change a flag (when clicking on it), change options (when accepting) or start a game the game crashes to my desktop. I've reinstalled it several times but it still doesn't work. What could be wrong?

Okay let's try some standard things.
1) Rename the AVI folder to AVI_back
2) Set the color depth to 16BIT
3) Turn off everything in the background like E-mail/ICQ/Messenger, Virus protection and everything in the system tray beside the clock.
4) Update your Windows, update your Video card drivers and audio card drivers. Then repeat steps 1-3.

Please run a DirectX Diagnostic:
Start menu –Run - then type Dxdiag, then select each tab across the top of the window, and run the tests on each tab. Then select “Save All Information” button in the lower right of the window. This will bring up a dialog box to allow you to select a name for the file where the information will be saved. You can save it right on the desktop as this will make it easy to find. Then copy the contents of that file from the start to the heading that says “DirectX components” then paste what you have copied into a post in this thread.

This doesn't work for me. Instead of repeating the same thing you tell other people to do, can you atleast tell us if Paradox anticipates a patch in the NEAR future so I can play without this game crashing to desktop every 30 seconds?? I upgraded all drivers, service packs and have the game patched with 1.1. Renamed all folders and turned off all running programs in my task tray ( a lot just to play a game I paid money for ). I have around 20 games installed on my machine and they all work with all my antivirus, IM, Winamp and spyware apps running. It's time to stop trying to fix the client machine and fix the freaking unstable application paradox has developed. This game is The Best Strategy Wargame imo....so please help me out here....

Um I never gave that advice to you since you never started a thread to ask for help.

I give advice that is apropriate to the situation, it just happens that those things help most people. And the fact that your system crashes a lot does mean something needs fixed on your end since it runs with no crashes on my system and the vast vast majority of people have no problems as evidenced by how few threads there are on this forum.

I think you will find my willingness to work with you to solve these crashes much higher if you start your posting career on this board with a better attitude. ;)

Ok, well my beef isn't with you. You are doing your job and I know you are working within your scope. But HOI 2 crashes on a lot of systems ok. I am here on the forums and I am reading peoples posts (and not just this forum) and they are very similar to mine. Again, I tried everything you said and it is still the same. Why do my other games not have issues?? My point here is that I paid money for a product that doesn't work on a typical XP machine that has no problems with any other games I play.....Call of Duty, Korsun Pocket, Joint Operations, Unreal Tournament 2004, BattleField Vietnam....I mean I can go on and on....Rome Total War, Full Spectrum Warrior and a few more. I am just a little frustrated thats all and when I see copy and paste replies over and over I can't help but expect a little more effort from Paradox. I just want to know one thing: Are the Paradox Developers going to atleast try and address this seemingly common problem? Believe me, It is mentioned in other forums and on reviews I have read on other sites as well. It gets a good review but the handful I read mention that the game crashes. One review went as far to say that the game crashes are typical of a Paradox game. P.S. Aren't you paid to be "willing" to help a paying customer?

Well if they have problems they should come to me, If it is a bug, ie Reproducible then they should follow the instructions in the sticky thread. The next patch will fix all identified bugs. If you know anything about Paradox you know it has an exemplary reputation for releasing patches that not only fix problems but often add many new features. For example EU2 was released 3 and a half years ago and still new features and enhancements are being released. I don't know many if any games that have ever done that. Also note that review copies are often pre gold copies.
And no I am not paid to be "willing" to help anyone. If you are abusive you not only get no help, you get banned from the board.

If you want help with a problem please first read the sticky thread " **** You must read this before posting **** " Then start your own thread.

Ok, I am glad I wasn't abusive then : ) Now that I have cooled down, and in all fairness, I have to admit I think I may have fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling the program then reinstalling the patch. I have been playing for an hour with no issues. Sorry for the venting, but I was a bit miffed earlier. In all honesty, I am impressed with the forum support here as it seems you (Castellon) try very hard to reply to all issues posted here. I actually haven't seen support like this on any other forum. And yes, Paradox has developed a great game. It may take awhile, but I am confident Paradox will iron out any bugs/issues that HOI 2 may have. Thanks for putting up with my ranting.....

Glad you feel that way and thank-you for your kind comments.
Feel free to come back and post here if you have any future problems.
I hope you get involved and participate in the general forum.

I have XP on my machine with all the power and system requirements to play
HoI2, which I just got. After playing one of the senarios for a couple of nights
and about a year into the game time, the screen suddenly went black. After a
few seconds an XP prompt appeared and said it had detected an error and HoI2 had to be shut down. This crash occurs at the same point in the scenario everytime I start from the last save, even after rebooting. I called
a computer tech specialist I hired a few weeks ago to tune up my system.
He said it was probably the game code trying to interface with another module in XP. I'm no geek, these are the techs words: "XP sees it as an incorrect entry point, a general protection fault occurs and shuts it down".
He said the prompt should identify the error so settings in XP can be changed to allow the game to play. In fact, after clicking into the prompt, there is a window where you can scroll down through a whole bunch of code that probably means something to the right geek. It invites you to send this code
via the internet to Microsoft to be told what you need to change at your end
to fix the problem. Once you're connected to the internet, the prompt has a
"send" button. I haven't done this yet - thought I would check the forum
first and after reading that others are having the same problem I thought I would share what I've learned so far. I'll try Microsofts way and/or maybe have my tech guy come by - I'll log in again and let you guys know if it works.
Any comments?

Well, see my post #2, also try loading in the autosave or oldautosave games and see if you can continue from them.

I don't understand "Mirrors"

Thanks, Castellon, for the response. You guys are the greatest game
company I have ever delt with and Hearts of Iron 2 is a strategy players
dream. Keep making it better. As it turns out, my problem solved itself when
I simply loaded the latest upgrade. You must have had that fix built in.
I am confused as to what a "Mirror" is, however. I was able to download the Mirrors 1,2 and 3 but 4 turned out to be HoI2 1.1 but was of a file type that I couldn't load. Mirror 5 I couldn't even access on the web. Installing 1,2 and 3 fixed my crash problem but what am I missing? Do you need all 5 Mirrors to have the complete 1.1 patch? What is a Mirror anyway? Would appreciate your help understanding this. Thanks.

A mirror, just means "the same thing" When you look in a mirror you see a "copy" of yourself.

So if someone puts a file up on the web at one site, and others take that and put it on thier site, then it is a Mirror. An alternative place to get the same file.

So I don't know where you saw the word used, but all the Mirrors should be pointing to the same file HOI2 1.1 and you would only need one of them.

here you go...

If you look through your report, you will see that Direct X is reporting errors, it suggests a reinstall, you have a messd up registry entries.

Thanks, Castellon, that explains it. I appreciate your reply. Chats
