creating new duke's?

The tittle might not cover the issieu but would i be able to change a "nation's" government?
I am especialy thinking about the merchant republics.
Let's say i am playing Milan, and somehow i manage to capture Genoa or Venice. Would i be able to put my own duke or count on the throne? And thereby create the Duchy of Venice? As my vassal ofcourse.

The only answe I see for your question would be to impose feudalism on merchant Republics by sheer conquest.

Wonder if that would ruin the economics of the game. Don't know how the merchant republics are going to be handled or if they have a great impact on the economy (they should of course). Does capturing Genoa make Venice stronger? Does it make you richer?

It should make you richer. There will always be the plunder you gain.
And ofcourse if you add the city somehow to your own lands then you shall also gain a permanent income boost.
Venice would also becoem stronger if you capture Genoa, since i can imagene that a lot of merchants from Genoa will mobe to Venice...

Pillaging them is a good way to get funding. Adding them to your own lands is even a better way.

Never thought of that. That may mean that it would be almost impossible to annex them (in the EU way). Perhaps only vassalage would be possible. Also it may be impossible (through some game feature) to get a claim on them so that you may not be able to conquer them in any permanent manner.

Well we must remember that world conquest as we know it didn't exist back then. Most rulers would make a state it's vassel and take the highest title forcing the former king to become a lowly duke, how sad.

But i bet they can be excomunitcated just as anyone else. thereby giving you a roason to attack them. Once in, it will take a hell of an efford to get me out again.

Yeah, how sad Well, to me, it is only sad if I have to be a mere Duke, demoted from being King. However, it is a wonderful thing to do to another countries. Also, being a Duke is better than being a earl, or even a Peasant.

Wasn't it said that you can not conquer a province unless you have the CK equivalent to a CB on it? If you can't get a CB on a Merchant Republic...

Of course, if I defeat Venice, I'd still like to have the republic declare itself my vassal.

Being as merchant republics are quite rich they should be able to field a fairly large and well equipped force of soldiers and mercenaries.

Merch are notoriously unreliable though. And money can be a paper shield sometimes when faced with a determined opposition.

Actually the Este family had a claim on Genoa and Pisa, so they could in theory take them over. Many of merchant republics were not in existance until the fight between pope and HRE started and the cities could shop around for greater rights.

..and Venice was basically a former western "bastion" of the Byzantine Empire..I think that the trade-republics are considered "sacred" for gamereasons..only Sergei or somebody else from the team could tell..

Not till maybe way later in the CK timeperiod did Venice really start fielding armies on the mainland. When Pepin came with his army, all he could do was just look across the water at Venice.

hmm, since the map is going to more acurate in CK, Venice might be an island city.
I wich case you would have a hard time invading it.

I wish we had some screenies so we knew the scale of the map.
