Creation of a Slavic Empire
A Rise to Power from the Ashes of Civil War

Prolouge - A Slavic State of Many Peoples

Even before the end of the World War I (1917 to be exact) the founding of a southern Slavic state was agreed upon. The first constitution in 1921 layed down Serbian predominance so that the various religions and traditions of the nation doomed the first Slavic state. The Croat Farmers' Party boycotted the government in Belgrade and demanded change. Even the Croats inclusion to the government in 1925 could not overcome the differences. In 1928, 3 top Croat Farmers' Party members were assassinated by Montenegrinian Radicals. Shortly after Alexander I, leader of this Slavic state, suspended the constitution and set up a monarchical dictatorship with himself as the head. In 1929 with the continuation of Serbian supremacy the Croats took extreme measures founding the ultra-national Ustasha. With the assassination of Alexander I in 1934 the already unstable nation was pushed to the breaking point.

In the time between 1934 and late 1935 the government of Yugoslavia continued it's shift towards complete dictatorship under H.R.H Pavle Karadjordjevic, the succesor of Alexander I. From the democratic Slavic state of 1921, to Alexander I's monarchy in 1929. Yugoslavia had gone through turbulent times full of raging discontent and conspiracy. Would it all end with Pavle Karadjordjevic's change of government to Fascism in early 1936? Or would it just open a new chapter of bloodshed? Also with another "Great War" looming in the distance would the fluctuating government of Yugoslavia be able to hold up against internal and external threats. Only time would tell.

Chapter I -Firery Ambitions

With the sudden change of government (not a radical change, but a change nonetheless) Croats, Slovenians, Serbians, and Montenegrians were all equally discontented. The Serbs had lost much of their power. The Croats vision for the government had been thrashed. To top it all off the standard of living was quite low compared to other Balkan nations of the time. Karadjordjevic was losing favor amongst the commonfolk (especially Serbians). To hold his nation together he'd need to gain the support of his people. Yet, due to Yugoslavia's diversity he could not possibly appease one group without annoying another. At the same time there was a crisis with Hungary occuring. The Slavic minority in Hungary were being abused severly. Mobs, often encouraged and sometimes supplied by the Hungarian government, drove Slavs off the border provinces by force and many were murdered in cold blood. Crack militias (based mostly of Croats) tried to break even by treating the Hungarians in northern provinces of Yugoslavia the same. Karadjordjevic planned to exploit this situation.

Karadjordjevic met with his military advisors and almsot all agreed with his plan for war with the Hungarians (The Croat advisors were especially pleased). Preparation began. All understrength divisions were filled to the brim with young nationalistic recruits. Factories in Belgrade pumped out aircrafts left and right and soon the airfields swelled with Blenheim bombers and Fokker fighters. By July 1936 the preperations were complete. The declaration of war was sent out on the fourth of August. No one could of predicted what followed. Soon after Italy and Austria declared war on Yugoslavia with a Casus Belli. In response Germany declared war on Italy. France, rather friendly to the Yugoslavian government compared to the other Allies, declared war on Austria. Germany moved to defend Austria and declared war on the Allies. Hungary did the same. Greece and Turkey declared war on Italy. (And then a whole mess off political stuff too long to address here so look below)

Yugoslavia/Romania ---- at war with ---- Germany/Austria/Hungary - Italy
Germany/Austria/Hungary ---- at war with ---- Yugo/Romania - Italy - Allies
Italy ---- at war with ---- Yugo/Romania - Germany/Austria/Hungary - Greece/Turkey
Greece/Turkey ---- at war with ---- Italy
Allies ---- at war with ---- Germany/Austria/Hungary

After much initial sucess on the Hungarian front efforts were soon dashed by the far superior German army with better equitment and tanks. The Yugoslavians were pushed back almost to Belgrade by the Germans. The Italians immediately jetted down the coast trying to quickly claim the provinces they had been trying to get for years. Haradjordjevic turned to the Rumanian's who were quick to lend a hand and fielded about 13 divisions. The Yugoslavian/Rumanian alliance was able to push the Germans back to the border between Austria and Yugo. 3 Italian divisions were trapped at the coast around Split and soon destroyed. The Yugoslavians advanced deep into Hungary and were soon at the outskirts of Budapest aided by 7 Rumanian divisions. The Germans still seemed the stronger, but for the most part they were held. Offensive actions were stopped around Budapest due to supply problems. It seemed like the chaos of the last 4 months had eased slightly. Yugoslavia had lived to fight another day.

Another World War started in strangely similar circumstances than the first

Wow so the Balkans helped to start another World War? That's so pretty complicated diplomatic stuff going on there. Any chance you're thinking of joining the allies or do you just want Romania allied?

Anyway your off to a good start, except for those German Divisions..........

I am liking this one. Consider me subscribed. After this war is done...will a great slavic nation be formed? What about the Soviet Union? what is there take on all of this?

Chapter II - A Victorious End, or an Overdue Beginning?

The winter of '36-'37 was a brutal one. Operations virtually stopped on both sides due to the extreme cold and the constant snowfall. Finally by May of '37 military operations could continue. Germany got a little greedy though and went for Belgium and the Netherlands. France was awoken from it's military sleep and burst through the scarce German border garrison and were unleashed into Nazi Germany. Greece, also fighting a war with the same enemies, joined the Yugoslavian/Romanian alliance and were able to field about 10 divisions to aid the cause. With Germany fighting a war of attrition in middle Italy and having to constantly send divisions to guard their homeland Germany was taking a beating. Italy, realizing that they both shared a common goal agreed with a white peace with the Yugoslavian alliance. In August of '37 (one year anniversary of the start of the war) Hungary was annexed. A month later (September, '37) The border provinces of Ljubljana and Maribor which had been occupied by the Germans since the first months of the war were liberated. And finally on the second of October Austria was annexed with French help. 3 days later France annexed Germany. Hitler was evacuated as Allied forces reached Berlin.

As reward for helping the Yugoslavian's throughout the war Rumania was given the Hungarian province of Debrecan. The Allies begun the daunting task of garrisoning Germany with partisan bands springing up everywhere. Partisans sprung up in Hungary and Austria too. Yet in much smaller groups. All forces lent to Yugoslavia from it's allies were returned. Greece, still at war with Italy, fought many battles with them. Repulsing the Italians multiple times at Crete and once at Keflonia. The Yugoslavian's felt obliged to help their ally, but war with Italy was not an option with the country still recovering from its war with the German/Austrian/Hungarian alliance.

Post war Yugoslavia and surronding nations

1938 was a year of technological advancement for Yugoslavia. Improved machine tools were forged, the military supply system was reworked for the better. Infantry divisions started recieving newly researched small arms and equitment replacing their rifles dating back to the first world war. Naval researchers made many breakthroughs. The agricultural system was modernized. The living standard was at it's highest point ever and Karadjordjevich had achieved his goal of gaining the support of the people and more. Just one more qualm had to be dealt with. The Italians. While most people agreed to concentrate on domestic issues after the war they grew suspicious of the Italians in the year of 1938. The bitter peace treaty had expired in September of '38 and that did not help to ease the people's doubt that Italy wouldn't attack again.

That is some serious alternate history!

In an MP game the Hungarian player DoWed Austria in '37 without telling anyone, then France and Italy joined the war, but the Czech/German/Romanian/Bulgarian alliance (yes it was a 5 player mp game! :D) triumphed over the snail eaters :p

This could be one hell of an AAR, I played a Yugo SP game once, it was a hell of a lot of fun :)

Carry on!

Chapter III - Another Conflict

Greece continued there war with Italy on the seas and on the shores of their homeland. Pleas for aid were sent to her allies, Yugoslavia and Rumania. Although initially declined growing tension between the alliance and Italy forced an acception. The mobilizatioln order was given to the Yugoslavian military and Rumanian. A 32 division invasion force was asembled and placed on the border. The declaration of war came on the 21st of April to catch the milder season in the Alps and the Yugoslavian/Rumanian coalition was ushered onwards.

The Italian military was battered during the 1936 conflict. Both by the Yugoslavians in the first 6 months of the war and by Germany/Austria for the remaining 18 (approx). They had suffered in the Banja Luka pocket and on the northern Italian front and by 1939 (this year) the Italian army was a sham of it's former self. In the opening week of the conflict Venice and Milan were captured with little bloodshed on the Balkan alliance's side. By month's end the Balkan alliance forces had pushed as far down as Rome when they were pushed back by Italian colonial forces. Balkan/Italian forces were locked in a stalemate for the next 3 months with small offensives here and there, but calm nonetheless. Bulgaria, after much prodding, agreed to join the Balkan alliance. Their forces were greatly needed at the front and much of their idle army sent there immediately.

Bulgarian/Greek reinforcements are ushered to break the stalemate
