Anyone know the game Crisis in the Kremlin? It's rather old though...

Just imagine it's the early eighties, and you're Gorbatschov in charge of the USSR.The cold war has begun to warm up a bit and nobody knows if the thaw of a new spring brings peace or just another hot period in the cold war. Your economy has been declining dangerously, nationalism isn't under control in the non-russian areas of the USSR. Tschernobyl and the change in the GDR lay ahead of you and you can't even think of such a senario yet but the loss of power lets you fear something similar. Moreover, both the military and the secret service are very strong and may plan a coup d'etat if you are cutting their budgets and if you're too outright reforming the old school communist faction of your empire will get very angry.

So what would you do? I am interested in real world strategies but gaming tips would also be nice if anyone knew that game

The American part of me says to convert to democracy, but I have a funny feeling you can't do that in the game. :(

So I guess you should decentralize, and hope to encourage economic growth bye leaving the leaders of the factories in charge, thus moving into a free market system, thereby increasing competition, and holding people accountable for their mistakes, but you'd have to keep crime, and nationalism under control, and what better way to to that than to start a war? Nazi Germany's homicide rates were much lower than America's in 1939 (12.8 percent of America's, 0.75 murders per 100,000 people, versus 5.84 per 100K in America. this excludes government sponsored killings, of cource.), and the only (open) nationalism was for a better, stronger, Germany. The USSR was at war w/Afganistan in the 80's wasn't it?

Oh, and increase production for consumer goods. Making people wait in a line for two weeks for toilet paper does not increase morale. :D

The answer is to get involved ina "hot" war! Give the people somthing to express their anger at and unite for. I advocate Soviet task force for the liberation of the Ethiopian SSR! Oh, that and fully integrating those E.European states into the Soviet System.... that'll take peoples minds off things for awhile, and get the military and intelligence busy! (If things go well, we can go back to Afghanistan and link up with India to tackle the U.S. puppet Pakistan, then switch back to the African front and expand to help what will soon be the Congolese SSR!) :p

too bad the game doesn't cover that. The problem is the USSR of 198x is more or less implementing what they denied to the Czechs in 1968 in economics and are really far behind. war productions disturbs economic development, but being weak means losing afghanistan to the US supported rebels (who are nowadays condemned by the USA) and encouraging revolts or capitalist attacks.

I played the game a couple of times some years ago. As far as I can remember, the best strategy was to follow a democratic development, allowing the Soviet empire to disintergrate. Of course, I really can't remember the end of the game - I might have been removed by a coup...

Good luck!
