In the Spring of 2004 Crusader Kings hit the forums with a roar, quickly earning its place in the sun beside the other Paradox titles.
Putting it nicely, the game had issues. CTD errors ravaged the AARs like Black Plague events. The game had unexpected bugs, like excommunicated Byzantine emperors and undead Muslim popes. Still, writers persevered and built the community that exists today - a CK community capable of awarding them a CrusadAAR's Chalice!
Eligibility:
While researching I determined 25 AARs eligible for nomination during 2004. Feeling this was far too many for one period, I split this in half based on the last time the AAR was posted to. Granted, this guarantees some time overlap but the alternative would be a careful analysis of every AAR and an arbitrary cutoff date of, say, "Ended on June 4, 2004." I believe this is a fair compromise.
To be eligible, the AAR had to be, within 2004:
1) Ended (in 1453 or at a given point by the author)
2) Failed due to a technical error
or 3) Abandoned, but the author made it clear they were doing so.
I also set a minimum number of updates by the author to reward some show of effort.
I tried to be lenient since we're dealing with older AARs and it's harder to gauge intent two years down the road, but if you believe I've overlooked one (or included one that's not eligible) - it's certainly possible. Point it out or send me a PM. I'll be happy to review it and post here either ratifying the AAR or disqualifying it.
How to Nominate:
Everyone can nominate once. They may nominate the same AAR someone else has (in effect seconding/thirding/etc. it,) or choose a new one. At the end of the nomination phase, the five AARs with the most nominations will 'advance.' (If there are less than five AARs nominated, they alone will advance. If there's a tie that takes us beyond five places, the tied AARs will advance as well.) I will ask a moderator to set up a poll for us, and we'll vote.
Deadlines:
The nomination phase will close on September 30, 2006.
Through October we will vote on the Chalice. We will also begin nominating for the second half of 2004 at that time.
Without further ado, here are your eligible AARs:
The Komnenus System, A Byzantine Empire AAR by Basil II
Empire of the South Slavs by Benjamin
The Witches Curse - A Croatian AAR v 1.02 by Brownbeard
An Attempt at World Conquest - Starting as Count of Plauen by Florian
Dragon's Tears by frogbeastegg
Reconquista: Tales of Aragon by hjarg
The Golden Fish Legend: County of Forez by Jestor
de Barcelona - Saviours of Iberian Peninsula? by Jylha
The Earls of Derby by richvh
The Carolingian Legacy by Solmyr
The Primary Chronicle of Polotsk by Solmyr
Beta AAR: The deeds of Salamon, King of Hungary by Tamas
