Basically I was playing as a catholic king of Sicily, and got maximum participation in a crusade. I got the event to either keep the title (Morocco) and let my heir rule Sicily, or to give it to a distant family member. I picked the family member option and he immediately went cadet branch, completely negating any bonus to having won the crusade in the first place.

I'm not sure how common this is, but if it isn't just my getting unlucky, maybe it needs fixing?

Cadet stuff can only occur with very distant dynasty members (basically members that are just defined as "your kin" instead of "your uncle/niece/cousin/etc" and with a king tier title or greater. Had it been one of your sons or brothers or cousins who got the title, everything would've been fine.

Yes. Maybe it should have to be a close family member who gets the crusade title?

I think you should be presented with a list of people to choose from rather than having it be a random dynasty member, as well. If your character had any brothers, it seems like it definitely should have gone to them instead.

There is an option to give it to a son or a brother, if one exists.

Even if you did give it to a nephew or a cousin, as soon as they became distant kin within a generation or so they would split off from the main dynasty the moment an ambitious relative took the throne (and had an heir to pass his new dynasty onto).

If the concern is that there won't be an alliance with the new realm, I suppose that's fair -- although that's shortly to become a moot point, as common dynasty won't be enough for an alliance to exist as of next Tuesday.

My concern is that it could only go to someone who was "kin" rather than a closer family member (possibly for succession reasons?) and they immediately made a cadet branch, so the net effect of my contributing was getting a neighbor who was in a state of mutual hatred with my entire dynasty because he left.

Would it be possible to make it so that the character given a title in that event receives some permanent opinion bonus which blocks or reduces the probability of the AI wanting to form a cadet branch at least until his successor is on the throne?

No, you get a neighbor who is extremely grateful to you and your dynasty members have a negative opinion modifier to him (not the other way around) for leaving the dynasty. As I said, the only thing you could conceivably lose is an ally, which will shortly be moot with the release of the next patch anyhow (as a common dynasty is no longer grounds for an alliance).

As I also said, there is an option to give it to a son or brother, if an appropriate one is available, but the "kin" option is random. I could add an option for a close family member, if one is available -- it just means restricting the other options if one is (as I can only put so many options in, for GUI reasons).

If it's really a concern, however, I would suggest just keeping the land and giving it away manually.

I might consider it if alliances weren't about to go away, anyhow.

Huh. I could have sworn he hated me for some reason. Perhaps I was looking at the wrong opinion? (Mine of him, rather than his of mine). Probably a mistake on my part then. Thanks :)

You could make it so the option for a close family member is made available if there isn't a son or brother available? But yeah. Moot point now anyway.

When were cadet branches introduced into vanilla CK2? With Conclave?

Today I saw Pepin the Hunchback (Charlemagne's bastard) form a dynasty of his own when he got to West Francia's throne in our MP game.

Those are cadets formed thru a bastard being landed and i think those were added in either ROI or CM.

What about the ones created when landing a distant relative with a kingdom or an empire? Were those also added in RoI or CM?

Thats mod specific and that was added a year ago.
Oh ffs. I was replying on my cell phone and totally forgot I'm in the CK2+ sub-forum instead of the main CK2 forum.

Yeah, I know the mod has cadet branches like that. But for a moment there I thought they got added to vanilla as well, lol. Oh well.
