I invite you of the very special class of Paradoxians to partake of my latest historical research endeavor, a translation of information from Italian into English regarding the Corpo Spedizione in Russia, commonly referred to as the CSIR in World War 2 circles -->

Further, as I am definitely no expert in Italian, if there are forumites here who possess native Italian language skill, I ask that you check my translation for accuracy. Amateur historians, or not, we must still be held to standards worthy of the name "historian".

excellent I appreciate it! I have a lot more to go and I have a very rough draft of my translation...

I particularly had trouble with "testa di ponte".... I think that is "bridgehead" but does it ALWAYS mean an attack on a bridge or could it be something like a "salient"?

ok need a check for accuracy on the first line of part 2. why does the author mention Machensen in reference to the 11th Army when Mackensen is a Corp commander? is this a mistake on his part or is there something in the translation I am not seeing?

I wouldn't know about Mackensen, but there is a mistake in the last post.

"Dal 14 agosto anche il Corpo di spedizione italiano venne trasferito alle dipendenze del Gruppo corazzato von Kleist, con il compito di proteggerne il fianco sinistro nella sua avanzata verso il Dnieper e partecipare successivamente all’offensiva oltre il fiume. Il 15 agosto la divisione Pasubio, assegnata temporaneamente al 3° Corpo Germanico, si spostò sulla riva destra del Dnieper tra i villaggi di Topilovka e Kryukof, per dare il cambio alla divisione SS Wiking spostatasi più a sud. Le operazioni di trasferimento durarono tre giorni ostacolate dalle cattive condizioni del tempo e dalle incursione aeree nemiche. Dopo tre giorni di relativa calma, i reparti della Pasubio dovettero spostarsi ancora più a sud tra Koluskino e Verhniednieprovsk, avvicendandosi di nuovo con la Wiking. Nell’ordine del giorno del 21 agosto redatto dal comandante del 3° Corpo Germanico, il generale von Mackensen, venne riportato:

“Il 3 Corpo corazzato è riuscito in questi ultimi giorni con aspri combattimenti di attacco e di difesa, a ricacciare un nemico numericamente superiore, da una zona assai estesa in una testa di ponte a sud-ovest di Dnjepropetrowsk…. "From 14th August the CSIR was also transferred to the command of Panzer Group Kleist, with the task of protecting the left flank on its advance towrds the Dnieper and then to take part in the offensive beyond the river. On August 15th the Pasubio division, temporarily assigned to the 3rd German Corps, moved on the right bank of the Dnieper between the villages o Topilovka and Kryukof, to take over the SS Wiking's position which had moved further south. The whole move took three days, obstructed by bad weather and enemy air raids. After three days of relative quiet, units from the Pasubio had to move further south, between Koluskino and Verhniednieprovsk, and fought again side by side with the Wiking. In the "order of the day" of August 21st as reported by the commander of the 3rd German Corps, general von Mackensen, it was reported:

"In these last few days the 3rd Panzer Corps managed, through harsh fighting in offense and defense, to push back a numericaly superior enemy, from a quite vast area on a bridgehead south-west of Dnjepropetrowsk... the condition for such a rapid advance was created by the division SS Wiking and by the italian division Pasubio, which, despite the unfavourable conditions of their command, and in part also despite the unfavourable situation of their fuel, overcame all difficulties with a rapidity that warms the heart."

galaahd, thx for this, you just solved my rough draft's most glaring problem...

at no point in my rough draft did I have it clearly stated they crossed the Dnieper, and it was a problem that haunted my whole draft. I had originally read this passage as something they were "planning" to do, not something they had did. then in the next part of the essay, I was confused how they launched the attack on Petrikovka from the ORIL river! but now I know they crossed the Dnieper here in this paragraph...
