In the beginning as Daenerys you get these liberation events that declare war on some slaver realm.

With some wars you seem to acquire land, with others not. Is this a bug or a feature?
The first war against Yunkai gave me nothing upon winning, then war for Meereen gave me Meereen. I think this is intentional. Then Yunkai reintroduced slavery and I could declare war on and conquer Yunkai. Afterwards an event fired for freeing slaves in New Ghis. When the war was finished, I didn't get any land, and the event fired for freeing slaves elsewhere.

Is it supposed to work this way? Or can you free slaves and get land in the same war?

There are two liberation CBs, Liberation and Emancipation, but I cannot recall which is which. Against Mereen and the second war with Yunkai the CB will let you conquer all their lands, and personally take what you occupy. For the later wars you only force them to revoke slavery.

So you can conquer New Ghis, Volantis etc after the slaves are freed in a different, subsequent war?

You can, but you need to use another CB to do so. If you don't mind event breaking you could mostly win the second war with Yunkai, then, before declaring peace go and attack New Ghis with the Conquest-type CB.

You also acquire New Ghis as a vassal if you choose to start a New Empire in the Eas and renounce you claim to the Iron Throne (if they haven't fixed the Targ events, you'll get a claim soon enough anyway).
