Despite a four year wait, it is with great pleasure that I welcome everyone to a new Development Diary for Darkest Hour! Today, I will introduce you to some of the changes that will be brought to you with Patch 1.06.
But first, a quick caveat: Patch 1.06 will not be released immediately. Our plan is to release it in the near future, first as an open beta on Steam to gather feedback; only after acting on that feedback will we officially release the Patch to everyone.
We could well say that no plan survives contact with reality, so we know that we might have to change our course based on what we think is best for the game. That’s also why we’re not giving you any timeline as of now, not even for the Open Beta.
So, if the Patch will not be released today, why this Dev Diary now? Well, that’s because we want to let our players know what is going on and what to expect from DH in the following months.
Now, let’s move to the content of the Patch. In this Dev Diary, we will talk exclusively about scripting content, whereas the new mechanics will be the subject of another DD.
For Patch 1.06, we’ve added a few new Events and Decisions, but mostly we worked on correcting and improving existing content. One objective for this Patch was to have a “saner” late-game situation compared to the past. To reach this goal, among others, we’ve added a few more Decolonization Events, Events for colonial entities dealing with their independence, and a few ways for Germany to organize its conquests.
The following list is almost exhaustive and should give you a pretty good idea of what you will find. We have:
- 8 Decisions for Germany to release each Reichskommissariat (with an option to refuse and remove the Decision from the list).
- A Decision for Germany to release the General Government (same as above).
- A Decision for Germany to release the Independent State of Croatia, with Events to handle its lack of legitimacy unless war is won (basically, it will have only claims as long as it is at war, getting cores only with peace).
- Again, for Germany, a similar chain to handle the Commissioner Government and the Government of National Salvation in Serbia.
- Improved the Meeting at Hendaye Event chain so that now it has high chances of alliance with Nationalist Spain if the Spanish Civil War is still ongoing.
- Added a new Decision for Germany for the occasion where it controls both Egypt and the Arab Federation as a puppet (it can force Egypt to be incorporated into the Arab Federation - with an option for Egypt to fight back).
- Added new Events to deal with Manchuria, which sometimes gets annexed by various countries:
- Germany can offer these lands to either Japan or Nationalist China or release Nationalist China as a puppet if it doesn’t exist.
- The Soviet Union can offer these lands to Communist China or release Communist China (as a puppet or as an independent country) if it doesn’t exist.
- The United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States can offer these lands to Nationalist China or release Nationalist China (as a puppet or as an independent country) if it doesn’t exist.
- Reworked and improved the existing Events for the decolonization of Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Israel, Libya.
- Added new Decolonization Events for India, Pakistan, Iraq, and Vietnam.
- Added an Event where an independent British Raj, if no longer a puppet of ENG, can decide to turn into India (and to give birth even to Pakistan, Burma, and Ceylon, if possible).
- Added similar Events for independent Dutch East Indies (can turn into Indonesia), independent French Mandate over Syria and Lebanon (can release Syria and Lebanon), and independent French Indochina (can release Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam).
- Added Events for Mexican and Portuguese historical support in the SCW.
- Corrected existing and added new Events to have historical cabinets for SPA and SPR during the Spanish Civil War.
- Added Decision for Germany (called Operation Felix) where, after the Bitter Peace, it can try to ally (or declare war on) the Spanish State or declare war on the Spanish Republic.
- Added a new Event (alternative to Pearl Harbor) for Japan to declare war only on the UK if the USA already surrendered.
- Added an Event for the UK to invite the USA to the Allies if it is waging a solitary war against Japan.
- Added a new Decision for the Soviet Union to declare war on Japan after the defeat of Germany.
- Added a new Decision for Soviet historical support to Communist China during the Chinese Civil War.
- Reworked the existing Event for Communist China to reignite the Civil War to make it less suicidal and also to force it to ask permission from its overlord if it’s a puppet.
- Added a similar Event for Nationalist China to reignite the Civil War and to force it to ask permission from its overlord if it’s a puppet.
- Added a historical Event where Xinjiang can remove itself from Soviet influence while the Soviet Union is being invaded by Germany.
- Modified the "Recruitment Campaign" Decision so that both the cost and the effects are ongoing while the Decision is active.
- Allowed AI nations to go to 3-year conscription during peace (previously, the AI was limited to 2-year conscription) and made it easier for the AI to mobilize past General Mobilization.
- Removed Montenegro from the 1941-42-43 scenarios and instead added Italian claims during the partitioning of Yugoslavia.
- Also made some corrections regarding Germany in the partitioning of Greece.
- Modified the Event of the Warsaw Uprising so that the Soviet Union can release a puppet Communist Poland instead of a puppet “standard” Poland.
- Corrected and improved a rare Event for a British attack on Norway.
- Made it so the USA removes the embargo on Japan in all actions in the Event of surrender to Japan and in the two hardest actions in the Events for surrender to the Soviet Union and Germany.
- Corrected a broken chain in a rare case for the Events where the winning faction in China can deal with the Warlords.
- Corrected the triggers of Event 2049020 (USA The US gears up for war).
- Corrected the trigger of Event 2001019 (ENG UK no longer receives Lend-Lease aid).
- Improved the Events for the surrender of Japan, Siam, and French Indochina; I am sure there are still cases where they do not work properly, but surely now they’re less than before!
- Corrected issues in more than 100 Events thanks to a few new debug checks (we’ll talk about these new checks in another DD)!
- Reviewed all uses of sleepminister/sleepleader/sleepteam commands in all Events, for reasons that will be explained in another DD.

That’s all from us for now!
Stay tuned, because a new patch is in the works! We still don’t know how much time it will take for it to be released, but we’re working on it!
In the meantime, we finally managed to have Patch 1.05.2 released officially on Steam! Enjoy!
(we are still working on releasing it on GOG, hopefully soon)
