I have a technical problem that I need your help with please.

I'm using Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday v1.2. I've had the game for about a month, and this is the only time I've found a problem I couldn't fix. Basically, it's Nov 22 1937 and I'm playing the Japanese. When I start the game, a pop-up box tells me that a general (Shima) has died. If I click "select", the game crashes. I loaded it up again, and did not press select. I figured this was the issue, I was trying to select a general that no longer existed. However, the game crashed again when I selected a Naval Bomber, and again when I clicked the Current Battles button. Basically, the game crashes if I click anything other than the map modes at the bottom or the pause button. I haven't used the Editor, I haven't manipulated the game files (except I renamed my avi folder to avi_back, like I saw in another thread). I've had other problems (flashing screen fixed by closing MM_diag.exe, slow game fixed by closing unecessary processes), but this is the first one, like I said, that I can't figure out.

I know I'm supposed to run dxdiag and save all information and post it here, but it looks quite long and posting it put me over the character limit in this post. Are there any parts I don't have to post? If you still need me to post it all, I can. Here's a little of what I know already:

I'm using XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600), an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Processor 3800+, I have 1GB RAM, and I'm using a Nvidia GeForce 6600 with 256 mb memory. I changed my display to 16bit already, and it didn't help.

Thanks in advance.

I doubt it is hardware related, which means the game has been corrupted.
You can file a bug report following the procedures in the sticky thread on the subject.

Now, as to what you can do about it that is tricky.
Maybe nothing, maybe using an earlier save.
One thing you can try is Loading the save as a different small nation in say South america.
Play past the point that it crashes or say let some time run at least till after the death notice.
Then save the game under a new name, reload that as Japan and see if you can continue.

I did what you suggested. I loaded the file, chose Canada, waited a few hours, and saved a new file. I loaded that file as Japan, there was no death message, and no crashing either. I've tried pretty much everything, and it hasn't crashed yet. Maybe it was a bug relating to that death message? I'm not sure, but thanks for your help anyway. :)

On a somewhat unrelated note, my game is extremely fast now. I suffered from the common lag issue, and was forced to delete a lot of processes every time I wanted to play. But after loading the game and trying to fix the CTD bug, the game is very smooth and I even have firefox in the background. Very strange.

Glad it worked for you, Yah! Canada.
