I had a 30 fleet ship with BCs, CLAAs and DDs engaging submarine fleets over and over, causing no damage whatsoever. The submarines just kept dis-engaging.

I paid attnetion to one of the battles and found the reason : The destroyers were refusing to close into range in order to attack the submarines. The entire fleet was at 30+ km range and doing nothing.

I dont know why, shouldnt the DDs of a task force have free reign against submarines instead of mysteriously staying out of range?

I had to seperate the DDs to form a new fleet in order to sink any submarines...and that still took months against the SU black sea submarine fleet with DD-10, since they kept dis-engaging with minimal losses and i had to manually sail up and down 2 sea provinces to engage them.

I had the same problem as Germany... its November 1939: my subs (ca. 40) sunk over 250 british convoys and about 10 escorts and 3 british dds... I only lost ONE, old ss (think type II). In that way submarine-warfare is pretty boring...

I think its a doomsday-issue, cause naval battels starts usually at lots of km distance if cvs are involved...

but are there any possibilities to make my submarine-war more challanging? maybe some houserules?

I have 5-6 sub-flottillas a max. 6 subs... - each with damaged subs in reserve... and i fish primary the english channel, the irish sea, the biscaya and the sea next to gibralta...

last thing: may the core-team write an event for the German "tropedo-crises" in early 1940? lowering sub-positioning and convoy-raiding temporariely?

I don't know if this is true, but I think its because the BC is trying to keep the subs at ITS maximum firing range, so the DDs and CLAAs are stayting with it, try it with only DDs and see how it goes.

Yea it works. But if he had a proper fleet around the DDs would have gotten ambushed and toasted.

I dont suppose its possible to mod more intelligent naval battles where every ship tries to close to their firing range instead of staying at max range for nothing? I mean, im pretty sure this wasnt how naval battles back then were fought, where a bunch of battleships sat at long range shooting and everyone else was holding hands and dancing.

No. It's an issue with the game's engine, and only someone with access to the source code (the Paradox devs) can fix it. Don't hold your breath waiting. It's highly unlikely to be fixed.

I thought that a ship that had a zero attack strength against a target didn't count for determining range. Was I just wrong about this, or did it change in the expansion?
