Does anyone have any ideas or ways in which you can attempt to manipulate the stability of your neighbors? I can't saeem to find any in-game, but I've only been playing for a week, so I'm obviously not too familiar with the intricate workings of the game. Also, is there a way to tell an army sitting in a province with a fortress to just go into seige mode instead of waiting to be slaughtered by superior forces? Thanks for the help.

I would like the capability of indirectly influenciung a potential ally or adversaries political stability. It is frequently done today (China-Taiwan) and was then also (Papacy-Venice). But as it is, EU doesn't capture this subtlety. If the Papacy could at least excommunicate a leader of the catholic nations that would be a start (merchat prince had some settings like this if i recall). But there are other ways too like perhaps being able to send ducats to support rebels or the opposition in a civil war. I'm sure there are more, but these would be a start in that direction and would greatly enhance the diplo side of the game.

As for seiges. OK, well your army has to reach a "critical mass" inside the opponents provice to get into seige mode. Seige mode is automatically activated if your army is large enough top conduct a seige. A province with a larger fortress requires a larger military compliment to consuct a seige and I also think that there has to be some ratio of infantry to cannon as well. That is, cannons don't seige without adequate infantry support but infantry can seige without cannon. Others?
 
Sorry, maybe I was unclear about my siege question. When I'm in a province I own, and I have good fortifications and say a 10/2/5 army...I see France or someone coming with a 50k army to attack me, is there any way to avoid the initial battle altogether and go into a siege mode where I can avoid the onslaught of my forces until reinforcements can be dispatched? Thanks.

Alas, no. Each level fortress comes with its one garrison, and there is no way to add or subtract from them voluntarily, or "enter" the fortress with other troops, except in an assault on an enemy fortress. The only thing you can do to save a small force is retreat out of the province and leave the enemy to attrit his army in a siege against your fortress. This works much better, of course, if it is a very large fortress in a province with very low support, and in winter: a Level 6 Fortress in Kola would be perfect for this tactic...
 
There are tricks to reduce an enemies stability but not much you can do to pump up your allies. If you can provoke an enemy who shares your state religion and doesn't have a CB his stability will fall by five. Now, if there were only some sure fire ways to provoke the AI into declaring war....
