Hello everyone

I tried out an old trick, which i had picked up from the total realism mod's forum.
a. Rename your C:\Program Files\Paradox Interactive\Arsenal of Democracy\gfx\map\units (or wherever you have installed the game) to "units backup" (so that you can revert to the original state without having to reinstall the game).
b. Make a new "units" folder (empty)

When you launch the game, you will notice that the progress bar gets stuck near the end. Minimise, and you will see this message:

"Units sprite files not found. Do you wish to continue?"

Select "Ignore"

In the game options (do it before you load a scenario or a saved game) select "use counters- on). The game should run faster...

Obviously, cou can't use this trick if you can't play with counters. Personally, i prefer sprites to counters, but speed is more important to me than graphics.

I hope this helps you enjoy this great game...

Α big difference in speed , or not ?

I think it is significantly faster. It is easy to test it, since you don't need to move any files, just rename a folder and create an empty folder.

To sum it up, mia dokimi tha se peisei...

Lol. How small the world is.

Eyxaristw!

Just wanted to say that i did some more testing and deleting the sprites REALLY speeds up the game. Everyone (who can live without the sprites...) should try it.

Although I never use sprites and they slow down a bit game loading, I always keep them since sometimes they can be useful, e.g.: if you have land troops and aircraft in the same province, switching temporarily to sprites allows you to pick the aircraft you want and merge them in a single unit (which is impossible to do with counters AFAIK).

-Hold Ctr + right mouse (or right mouse only? just don't remember :eek:o ) => menu => select air unit => do what you want

Mmmh... it didn't worked. There's no menu option if I right-click a province (either by holding down CTRL or not) where are stationed aircraft and land troops  .

Select one air unit, hold down the shift button and drag a square around the selected air unit, then shift-click away the units you don't want to merge.

I don't remember the file names now, but if you leave one sprite file in the unit folder and the corresponding .bmp-file in the bmp folder, you won't get the error messages.

Take a look at the Hoi Wiki http://www.paradoxian.org/hoi2wiki/index.php/Technical_Issues

Sprites

This change will allow you to both load and play the game much faster, but it only works if you use counters instead of sprite. Note that the file to be left alone in those folders do not have to be the one mentioned. Any of the other files will do as long as their file name match.

1. Open HoI 2 directory\GFX\map\units.
2. Backup this folder and its subfolder just in case you want to play with sprite again later or if anything wrong happens.
3. Delete all files in HoI 2 directory\GFX\map\units except "T-BATTLESHIP A-WALK C-MIN L-1 D-NW.spr".
4. Open HoI 2 directory\GFX\map\units\bmp.
5. Delete all files in HoI 2 directory\GFX\map\units\bmp except "T-BATTLESHIP A-WALK C-MIN L-1 D-NW.bmp".
6. Start the game and feel the speed.

That was what I was trying to explain. :) It doesn't have to be the T-BATTLESHIP files though.
